With its big engines and turbines booked years ahead, what decides the stock from here is how fast Caterpillar can lift production.

Caterpillar (CAT) cleared $20 billion of sales for the first time in its history in the second quarter of 2026, and the stock has still fallen 6.5% over the past three months. The upside case from here is not about winning more orders but about how fast the company can get product out the door.

Its Gas Prime Power Slots Run Into 2029

The backlog was a record $63 billion when Caterpillar reported the first quarter of 2026 and $72 billion by the second. Where the queue ends matters more than its size: by the company’s own account, lead times on gas engines for prime power now run into the back half of 2028 and 2029, turbines a little longer, and some Power & Energy customers are placing orders as far out as 2030. The full-year 2026 sales growth outlook climbed with the order book, from low double digits after the first quarter to mid- to high teens after the second.

Adding Capacity Without Building New Plants

Management is plain about the constraint: Power & Energy is not short of demand, only of production. Caterpillar is restarting a 10-megawatt medium-speed gas reciprocating engine platform it stopped building in 2022, bringing about 1.5 gigawatts of production capacity back online with minimal investment because the supply base and internal capability were already in place; first shipments are due in the fourth quarter of 2026. It also spent under 12 months converting a 250,000-square-foot work-tool factory in Wamego, Kansas, which now ships the PGM130 for data center power generation.

The Growth Is Real, But It Is Narrow

The restart alone will not re-rate a company with $74.7 billion of revenue over the trailing twelve months; what compounds is the habit of growing inside the footprint it already has. Where that growth comes from is narrow: power generation sales to end users grew 72% in the second quarter of 2026 on demand for large gensets and turbines going into data centers, so the company’s fastest-growing line now tracks a single theme: the pace of data center build-out. The Trefis High Quality Portfolio, by contrast, does not depend on the handful of largest technology names for its returns.

The Second-Half Read Will Be Muddier Than It Looks

So is the upside real? The demand behind it is, and the stock does not need long to reprice: it has gained more than 30% in under two months on 12 separate occasions since 2010, and it currently trades about 21% below its 52-week high. The narrow test is whether Power & Energy volume growth steps up in the second half of 2026, because it was the one primary segment whose sales and revenues merely met the company’s own expectations in the second quarter of 2026. One thing will muddy that read: Caterpillar expects dealers to cut Construction Industries inventory by over $1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026, a hit to reported machine volume that says nothing about throughput. With implied volatility at 41, in the 80th percentile of its trailing one-year range, the market is braced either way. The place to follow the setup is a screen of stocks the market has marked down while their operations kept building.

Finding Winners Is Half The Job, Keeping The Gains Is The Other

Spotting the opportunity is the enjoyable half of investing; keeping what it earns is the half that compounds. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
