Shares of Steel Dynamics (STLD) fell 7.6% on Thursday, November 5, 2026, while the S&P 500 lost 4.4% the same session. The company issued no announcements, earnings reports or filings around the move, and every company on its Trefis peer list fell more than 6% that day. Was the fall about the market, about steel, or about Steel Dynamics itself?

Was It The Market Or The Company?
The entire market declined on November 5, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 5.5%, an even larger fall than the S&P 500’s. AI-linked technology shares led that decline, as investors worried the Democrats’ midterm wins could slow the US data center build-out.
A drop this broad has happened 21 times before. Here’s what came after.
Financial results at Steel Dynamics have been rising, and management tied the latest gain to steel prices. The company generated $6.51 billion in revenue during the third quarter of 2026, up 34.8% from a year earlier. During the October 20 call, management said its steel operations earned 43% more operating income than in the second quarter as average selling prices rose $102 a ton.
Management said about 80% of its flat-rolled steel is sold on contracts whose prices follow the market with a lag of about two months. Nonresidential construction supports demand for its long steel products, management added, with order backlogs extending well into 2027. The company’s profit, then, depends mostly on what its steel sells for and how much of it customers buy.
Did Steel Dynamics Fall With Other Steel Stocks?
Yes, and steel stocks fell harder than the wider market. Nucor fell 8.3% and Cleveland-Cliffs fell 12.2%, while no company on Steel Dynamics’ peer list fell less than 6.3%. The materials sector fund XLB fell 2.9% during the same session. Steel Dynamics moved with its steel peers, and the whole group fell more than both the materials sector fund and the S&P 500.
Steel Dynamics After Its Largest Fall In A Year
Steel Dynamics had no fall this large in the prior 365 days, and the decline came a day after a 3.0% drop on November 4.
Over the past twelve months, the stock still returned 47.9%, compared with 9.9% for the S&P 500. Shares reached a closing high of $282.76 on June 12, 2026, and have lost 15.3% over the last three months, compared with a 5.0% loss for the S&P 500. Steel Dynamics now trades at 1.4 times its sales, less than half the S&P 500’s 3.2 times.
Steel Dynamics is expected to report its fourth-quarter 2026 results in January 2027, and the average price it gets for each ton of steel is the measure to watch.
