Does Beating The Market Prove Ralph Lauren Is A Great Company?

Ralph Lauren (RL) is a consumer discretionary stock, selling high-priced collections of clothing, outerwear, and handbags. The shares have beaten the S&P 500 in each of the last four years. A record like this looks like proof of an exceptional business that keeps winning because it operates better than the rest. So take a guess: of about 480 large U.S. stocks, how many did the same?
How Rare Is Ralph Lauren’s Winning Streak?
Here is how Ralph Lauren stock performed against the S&P 500 in each of the last five years, measuring price changes before dividends.
| Period | The stock | S&P 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 14, 2021 to Oct 14, 2022 | -21.5% | -19.3% |
| Oct 14, 2022 to Oct 17, 2023 | +25.4% | +22.1% |
| Oct 17, 2023 to Oct 17, 2024 | +74.8% | +33.6% |
| Oct 17, 2024 to Oct 21, 2025 | +65.1% | +15.3% |
| Oct 21, 2025 to Oct 22, 2026 | +14.0% | +13.8% |
Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.
Of the 485 measured stocks, which comprise current S&P 500 members with five years of price data, only 22 beat the index in each of the last four years. This record is rarer than it sounds because losing to the index is the normal result. In the latest year, just 43.3% of those stocks beat the index at all. Outperforming the benchmark once is already the less common outcome, and doing so four years running is rare.
Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?
A group this large will produce a few long streaks even if no single company is better than any other. About four in ten of these stocks beat the index in a typical year of the streak. Now suppose pure luck determines the winners. Imagine placing all 485 names into a hat every year and pulling out four in ten to represent those winners.
Repeat that process four years in a row, and about 12 names will win every single time, with no skill involved at all. In reality, 22 companies have such a streak, representing about twice as many as luck alone would provide. While more stocks maintain the streak than random chance would produce, this fact alone does not prove any of them earned it, and you cannot tell which ones did simply by looking at the share price.
Did Ralph Lauren’s Profit Grow Through The Streak?
Yes. Ralph Lauren’s twelve-month profit rose in all four years. This figure climbed by 90.5% over the whole stretch, while the stock rose 312.7%. Profit here represents net income, with one-time items included.
A reader can verify rising profit independently of the share price. The growth provides evidence, but it is not a ruling on whether the streak comes from skill.
What To Watch Instead Of The Streak
Ralph Lauren’s sales in Asia rose 25% in fiscal Q1 2027, management said on the August 6, 2026 call, and sales of women’s apparel, outerwear and handbags grew faster than the company as a whole. On the same call, management raised its outlook for fiscal 2027 revenue growth to 5% to 6%, up from 4% to 5%.
A streak records past share price movements, while the underlying business shows up in actual earnings. Ralph Lauren’s growth in twelve-month profit is the figure to watch when the company next reports.
