Why Is Everybody Paying A Premium For Palantir Stock?

Shares of Palantir Technologies (PLTR) trade at 156.6 times its earnings over the last twelve months, compared with 22.6 times for the S&P 500. Because Palantir already makes a large profit on its sales, that valuation looks like a bet on how far those sales can still grow. So which part of Palantir’s business are buyers paying up for?

Palantir Is Growing Fastest With Domestic Commercial Customers
On the August 3, 2026 call, management said revenue from U.S. commercial customers grew 149% from a year earlier in the second quarter of 2026, reaching $764 million. In the same quarter, Palantir’s government business as a whole grew 79%, and total revenue grew 92.8%.
Management says the demand comes from companies seeking sovereign AI. These customers want full control of the data, logic and security behind the AI they build on Palantir’s AIP platform. Palantir finished the quarter with 653 U.S. commercial customers, 35% more than a year earlier.
How Fast Would Palantir Have To Grow?
At this price, just to maintain its $472 billion market value with no return on top, Palantir would have to grow its revenue 33.6% a year for seven years. At a mature P/E of 28.8, supporting that value would require $16.4 billion of yearly profit. Assuming a net margin of 35%, Palantir would need $46.9 billion of revenue to earn it. That revenue requirement is 7.61 times the $6.16 billion Palantir took in over the twelve months to June 2026. We place that margin just under halfway between the company’s average of 23.1% and its peak of 49.0% over the last twelve quarter ends. We use a timeline of seven years, our longest horizon, because Palantir’s P/E today is 5.44 times the mature one.
Like the margin and the horizon, the mature P/E is a Trefis assumption. We assign 60% of its weight to 28.0, our level for software companies. The other 40% would go to Palantir’s own average P/E of 246.0 over the last twelve quarter ends. Because that historical average is so high, we use 30 in its place.
Can Palantir Keep Growing That Fast?
Management expects so for 2026. On the August 3 call, management raised its revenue guide to between $8.15 billion and $8.16 billion, an amount 82.2% more than in 2025. It also expects U.S. commercial revenue to grow at least 134% in 2026, faster than the company as a whole. After 2026, Palantir would still have to grow 30.9% a year for six and a half more years. That is slower than the guide, but the company must sustain it for far longer.
Palantir has not always grown that fast. In the twelve months to June 2023 it grew 17.2%, against 78.9% in the twelve months to June 2026.
The required growth is most sensitive to how many years Palantir has. Evaluated over five years instead of seven, Palantir would have to grow 50.1% a year. If the company kept the 49.0% net margin of its latest twelve months, it would need 27.4% a year, but that margin is its highest at any quarter end since mid-2020.
For today’s price to hold, Palantir would have to keep its U.S. commercial business growing for years after 2026 while maintaining most of today’s margin. If growth slips back toward its pace of a few years ago, Palantir would need more years, and the stock becomes a riskier bet. Revenue growth from U.S. commercial customers is the measure to watch when Palantir reports in November 2026.
