Onto Innovation (ONTO) stock trades at 82.8 times what the company earned over the twelve months to June 2026, while the S&P 500 trades at 23.0 times its earnings. That multiple is high partly because profit fell: Onto made $133 million over those twelve months, down from $200 million a year earlier. So what would Onto’s business have to do for a price like this to hold up?

How Fast Would Onto Innovation Have To Grow?

At this price, Onto would have to grow its revenue about 11.5% a year for six years just for the stock to hold its value as its P/E falls to a mature level. The six years, that mature P/E and the margin below are Trefis assumptions, not company targets.

We set the mature P/E at 25.2. This calculation assigns a 60% weight to 22.0, the multiple we use for semiconductor companies, and a 40% weight to Onto’s own P/E. Onto averaged a trailing P/E multiple of 59.2 over the past twelve quarter ends. Because that figure exceeds our standard ceiling, we capped the multiple at 30.0 for this model. That cap, rather than Onto’s own history, sets that portion of the mature P/E.

Onto’s shares were worth $10.98 billion at the October 21, 2026 close. At the mature P/E, that value matches a yearly profit of $436 million. Generating that profit at a 20.3% net margin would require $2.15 billion in revenue. Onto’s net margin averaged 16.8% over the past twelve quarter ends, reaching a high of 21.4%. Our 20.3% assumption sits between those two numbers, nudged toward the 22.0% margin we use for semiconductor companies. That required revenue is 1.92 times the $1.12 billion Onto recorded over the twelve months to June 2026. We allow six years because today’s P/E is 3.28 times the mature multiple, and a wider gap takes more years to close.

Onto Innovation’s Growth Now And Management’s Outlook

Onto grew far faster than that yearly pace in its latest quarter, with fiscal Q2 2026 revenue rising 35.3% from a year earlier. Over the twelve months to June 2026, growth was 8.1%, held down by fiscal Q3 2025, when revenue fell 13.5%.

Management credits its position with customers in both front-end and advanced packaging. During the fiscal Q2 2026 call, the company raised its full-year growth outlook for advanced packaging to about 80%, up from 50% a quarter earlier, on demand for its new Dragonfly G5 inspection systems. Management also said that its backlog had reached a record, with 30% to 40% of it covering 2027.

Management has not put a dollar figure on revenue for the full 2026 fiscal year. It guided fiscal Q3 2026 revenue to about 14% above Q2 at the midpoint, and raised its outlook for second-half revenue to 25% or more above the first half, from 15%. When asked about 2027 on the call, management said it was not ready to provide an outlook for that year, though it saw no reason it could not keep outperforming the market.

What If Onto Innovation’s Margin Does Not Recover?

If Onto’s net margin stayed at the 11.8% recorded over the twelve months to June 2026, the company would then have to grow revenue about 21.9% a year. No other case we tested moved the answer as much. Reaching the target in four years instead of six would require about 17.7% a year, and assuming a mature P/E of 22.0 would require about 14.0%.

Onto’s net margin rose from 3.9% in fiscal Q4 2025 to 11.6% in fiscal Q1 2026, before reaching 17.5% in fiscal Q2 2026. Management guided a GAAP operating margin of 21.4% to 22.4% for fiscal Q3 2026, up from a GAAP operating margin of 19.6% in Q2.

Onto’s yearly sales have swung widely, though. They rose 43.4% in the twelve months to mid-2022, fell 2.9% in the year to mid-2023, were flat in the year to mid-2024, and rose 15.5% in the year to mid-2025.

For today’s price to hold, Onto’s packaging orders would have to keep turning into sales through 2027, while its net margin climbs back toward the 20.3% we assume, near its 21.4% high of early 2025. If sales growth cools before the margin recovers, Onto would need more years, and buying the shares becomes a riskier bet. Management plans to present an updated financial model at an analyst meeting in December 2026, and the net margin it lays out there is the figure to watch.
