Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) stock fell 7.3% on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.3%. The decline occurred on the day the company reported third-quarter results that beat estimates for both earnings and revenue. Old Dominion’s Third-Quarter Results And Fourth-Quarter Outlook

For the third quarter of 2026, Old Dominion’s earnings per diluted share were $1.65, compared with the $1.61 analysts expected. Revenue came in at $1.59 billion, against estimates of $1.57 billion.

Revenue rose 13.1% from a year earlier. Management said the gain came mainly from a 13.3% rise in revenue per hundredweight, which measures what the company earns for each unit of weight it carries. The amount of freight hauled barely changed. Tons per day fell 0.1% for the quarter, though they rose 1.6% in September from a year earlier. The company also kept more of each dollar of revenue: its operating ratio, operating costs as a share of revenue, improved by 280 basis points to 71.5%.

For the fourth quarter, management expects revenue of $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion, which it said would be above its normal seasonal pattern. It expects the operating ratio to be around 73.5%, and said that, on its 10-year average, the ratio rises about 200 to 250 basis points from the third quarter to the fourth. Management also said cost inflation per shipment ran higher than it had expected in the third quarter.

Did Old Dominion Fall With Other Freight Carriers?

Old Dominion fell alongside other freight carriers, but it dropped further. Knight-Swift Transportation, also on its peer list, fell 3.4% during the same session, and Old Dominion’s drop was about twice the size of JB Hunt’s. The industrials sector went the other way: the sector fund XLI rose 0.3% in step with the S&P 500.

Where Does Old Dominion Stock Stand Now?

A fall this large is rare for Old Dominion. In the prior 365 days, one session brought a drop at least as big: a 7.9% fall on March 6, 2026.

Over the twelve months to October 28, the stock returned 27.5%, compared with 14.0% for the S&P 500. The path there was uneven. Shares climbed from a closing low of $126.29 on November 20, 2025, to a closing high of $248.73 on June 9, 2026. Over the three months from July 30, they have lost 18.3%, while the S&P 500 gained 4.4%.

Old Dominion is expected to report its fourth-quarter 2026 results in February 2027, and its operating ratio is the measure to watch.
