Nucor (NUE) stock rose 5.2% on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.6%. The shares climbed the session after the steelmaker reported its third-quarter results, outpacing smaller gains among its steel peers that day. How did the quarter stack up against what analysts expected?

Nucor Topped Sales Estimates But Missed Slightly On Earnings

Nucor’s revenue of $11.25 billion surpassed the $10.84 billion analysts expected, while adjusted earnings per share of $5.80 came in slightly below the $5.84 estimate. News reports on October 26 that used a lower estimate of $5.71 called the result a beat. The company released these figures after the market closed on Monday, October 26, and management held its earnings call on October 27, the day the stock rose.

On the call, management described the period as the strongest quarter in more than three years. It said earnings beat the middle of the company’s guidance mainly because of higher shipments and higher average selling prices at its steel mills. Those facilities shipped more than 7.2 million tons, setting a quarterly shipment record for the third time in a row. Management also said the order backlog in its towers and structures business, which supplies utilities, has more than doubled since the start of the year and extends into early 2028.

Did Nucor Rise With Other Steel Stocks?

Yes, and it outpaced all of them. Among Nucor’s peers, Steel Dynamics and Cleveland-Cliffs each gained 3.9%, while Reliance rose 2.6% and Commercial Metals 1.6%. The sector and the broader market moved much less. The materials sector fund XLB rose 0.8%, staying close to the gain in the S&P 500. Ultimately, Nucor tracked the steel stocks rather than the market as a whole.

Where Nucor Stock Stands After The Gain

A rise this large is rare for Nucor. The stock had gained this much or more in two sessions over the prior 365 days. From its close on October 24, 2025, shortly before a 5.4% jump on October 28, 2025, through Tuesday, the stock returned 97.5% including dividends, compared with 15.0% for the S&P 500.

The shares’ lowest close of the past year was $142.66 on November 10, 2025. On Tuesday, they closed at $270.79, just under their 52-week closing high of $274.74 from August 5, 2026.

Nucor is expected to report its fourth-quarter 2026 results in January 2027. Management expects earnings for that quarter to be in line with or modestly higher than the third quarter’s, and those earnings are the number to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On NUE?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
