Where Did Nucor Stock’s Gains Really Come From?

Nucor Corporation (NUE) operates steel mills and manufactures products ranging from sheet and plate to towers and structures. The stock has risen 170.9% before dividends since early July 2021. It is natural to credit a growing business for all of that performance. So take a guess: how much of that rise came from Nucor selling more?

How Much Did Nucor’s Sales Grow?
Sales grew 38.9%, explaining only about a third of the stock’s rise. Twelve-month sales increased from $26.0 billion in mid-2021 to $36.1 billion in mid-2026. That growth was real and accounted for part of the gain, but only part.

What Else Lifted Nucor Stock?
The rest of the advance came from what investors pay for Nucor’s profit and a smaller share count.
| Driver | Then | Now | Share of the stock’s rise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales, twelve months | $26 billion | $36.1 billion | 33% |
| Net margin | 11.7% | 8% | -38.3% |
| Price-to-earnings multiple | 9.4 | 20.7 | 78.9% |
| Diluted share count | 298 million | 229 million (-23.2%) | 26.5% |
Then: sales and net margin for the twelve months to Jul 3, 2021, the diluted share count for the quarter ended that day, and the multiple at the close of Jul 2, 2021. Now: the twelve months and the quarter to Jul 4, 2026, and the multiple at the close of Oct 20, 2026. The four shares add up to 100% before rounding. A negative share means that source pulled the price down. Split-adjusted share price, dividends excluded.
The price-to-earnings multiple provided the largest boost. It rose from 9.4 to 20.7, and that shift alone explains nearly four-fifths of the overall advance. Put simply, investors now pay far more for each dollar Nucor earns, even though twelve-month profit sits a little lower than in mid-2021.
Stock repurchases provided another tailwind, with a 23.2% drop in the share count accounting for about a quarter of the rise. Meanwhile, the net margin fell from 11.7% to 8.0%. That contraction erased the equivalent of about 38% of the stock’s advance, explaining why the other factors add up to more than 100%. The latest twelve months also feature a non-cash investment gain worth $0.20 a share in fiscal Q2 2026, which management excluded from adjusted earnings.
How Far Can Margins And Multiples Go?
While sales can grow year after year, the margin and the multiple have limits. Looking back over the ten years to fiscal Q2 2026, Nucor’s margin peaked at 21% in fiscal Q2 2022, well above where it stands today.
On a quarter-end basis, the multiple sat at 17.6 at the end of June 2026. This falls inside a ten-year range of 3.0 to 53.1. A margin cannot widen forever and a multiple cannot rise forever. Consequently, neither metric can pull the stock higher without end the way growing sales can.
What Nucor Would Need To Repeat Its Rise
Assuming the margin, multiple, and share count remain flat, Nucor would need 20.7% annual sales growth over roughly the next five years to replicate the stock’s recent performance. By comparison, sales grew 6.8% a year over the past five years.
Sales are currently expanding at a faster clip. Revenue in fiscal Q2 2026 climbed 23.0% from a year earlier. Management said higher average selling prices, especially in sheet and plate, were the largest drivers of the steel mills segment’s earnings increase from the prior quarter. Steel mill shipments also hit a quarterly record of 7.1 million tons.
Nucor’s yearly sales growth, weighed against the pace needed for a repeat performance, is the figure to watch when the company reports on or around October 26, 2026.
