Is Micron Stock Riskier Than It Looks?

Micron Technology (MU) stock trades at 13.1 times its last twelve months of earnings, compared with 22.6 for the S&P 500. That valuation looks cheap for a company whose net margin over those twelve months reached 63.8%, its highest at any fiscal quarter end from fiscal 2017 through fiscal 2026. Holders paying a low multiple for a profit at that level need to know what could slow its rise, and Micron’s management offered a clue during the September 30, 2026 earnings call. So what risk did management point to?

Micron Expects Price Increases To Slow
While the risk is real, management describes a gradual change rather than a sudden one. During the fiscal Q4 2026 call, management said margins in fiscal 2027 should expand from the first quarter on continued price increases, albeit at a more moderate pace. Management added that it had said for some time that price increases would eventually moderate.
In other words, management tied Micron’s next margin gains to prices it expects to rise more slowly. It also said start-up costs would partly offset the lift from price and a favorable mix.
How Much Of Micron’s Business Is Exposed?
Management discussed margin expansion for the company as a whole, rather than for a single unit. It also said about three quarters of revenue under its long-term supply agreements has a defined pricing framework, with the rest open to market pricing. Micron generated $54.2 billion in fiscal Q4 2026 revenue, up 379.3% from a year earlier. Gross margin in that quarter reached 86.8%, compared with 44.7% in fiscal Q4 2025.
Micron’s results have turned sharply in the past. In the twelve months to August 31, 2023, revenue fell 49.5% and the company posted a loss.
The share price has already given back some ground. Micron closed on October 28, 2026 at a level 19.0% below its highest close of the past year, which it reached on June 25. The stock costs 8.3 times sales, down from 14.4 times at the end of June 2026, as twelve-month sales climbed to $133 billion.
Should Micron Holders Worry Yet?
While the risk is real, by management’s account it would arrive slowly. Management expects market conditions to stay tight through 2028 and said it expects to sustain strong financial performance.
This slower pace arrives with the stock trading at a lower earnings multiple than the S&P 500, so holders are not paying a premium for Micron’s current profits. Still, Micron also traded at a low 6.3 times earnings in September 2022, and then posted a loss for fiscal 2023.
Micron’s gross margin will be the measure to watch when the company next reports, expected in December 2026.

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
