This AI chipmaker is on a historic run, but the price of admission is steep, forcing investors to decide if the engine has more power than the market has already paid for.

Marvell Technology (MRVL) has been a monster, a stock that has rewarded its owners with a 191% return over the last twelve months. But a recent 30% pullback from its one-month high puts every would-be buyer in a familiar bind: the fear of chasing a rocket versus the fear of missing the rest of the ride. As a key supplier of data infrastructure semiconductors, Marvell sits at the heart of the AI buildout. Despite the pullback, the stock’s trailing twelve-month momentum is still in the top 1% of all large U.S. companies for trend strength. The open question for anyone sizing it up today is whether that momentum is fully priced, or if there is still fuel in the tank.

The AI data center is a powerful engine.

This is no speculative run. Marvell’s performance is anchored in genuine business quality, starting with explosive growth. Revenue over the last twelve months grew 34%, crushing the 7.7% median for an S&P 500 company. This growth is profitable, with the company turning 24% of its revenue into operating cash flow, a mark that also tops the market median.

The engine here is the insatiable demand for AI infrastructure. Management projects its data center business will grow approximately 50% this fiscal year. The demand is especially fierce for the high-speed connectivity that prevents AI clusters from becoming bottlenecked, with Marvell’s interconnect business now expected to grow more than 70% year over year.

The market charges a steep premium for that engine.

That kind of performance does not come cheap. An investor today pays a price-to-earnings multiple of 73.1, a stark contrast to the S&P 500 median of 24.0. On a price-to-sales basis, the multiple is 21.2, again far above the market’s 3.3 median. The market is not missing this story; it is charging a significant premium for a ticket.

The real risk inside Marvell stock is not valuation itself, but the execution required to justify it. The company’s ambitious multi-year forecast hinges on delivering large, complex custom silicon programs for the world’s largest cloud companies. To meet this demand, management is “aggressively locking in additional capacity” and forecasting “approximately $1 billion in prepayments” to suppliers this fiscal year. Any stumble in this high-stakes supply chain ballet could disrupt the growth narrative, regardless of end-market demand. For investors who prefer to bet on the entire theme, a semiconductor ETF like SOXQ offers broader exposure.

The custom silicon ramp is the number to watch.

For a buyer at today’s price, the entire investment case rests on Marvell’s ability to keep accelerating. The single most important test of this is the performance of its custom chip business. This is where Marvell designs bespoke silicon for hyperscale customers, a business that requires flawless execution and deep trust.

Management has set a very high bar, stating they now expect custom revenue to “more than double year over year” in fiscal 2028. This outlook is driven by the ramp of a “new tier 1 XPU program into volume production.” Hitting that target would validate the premium valuation. Missing it would suggest the run has gotten ahead of reality. That is the watchable that will tell you if the engine is still pulling.
