Jabil (JBL) builds products that other companies design, manufacturing everything from systems for AI data centers to injectors and delivery pens. Its stock has risen 318.5% since the end of August 2021, before dividends. It is natural to credit the business for the entire gain. So take a guess: how much of the rise came from Jabil selling more?

How Much Did Jabil’s Sales Grow?

Jabil expanded its sales 22.8% over the same five years, a figure that lags far behind the stock’s performance. Sales reached $36.0 billion in the twelve months to August 2026, compared with $29.3 billion five years earlier. Sales therefore explain only about a seventh of the stock’s gain. That calculation assigns the overall increase across sales, margin, multiple, and share count by multiplying them together, rather than dividing one percentage by another.

The underlying business did grow, and Jabil earned that growth. Yet most of what lifted the shares came from somewhere other than selling more.

What Else Lifted Jabil Stock?

Three other factors lifted the shares: a higher multiple, fewer shares, and a wider margin.

Source Then Now Share of the stock’s rise
Sales, twelve months $29.3 billion $36 billion 14.3%
Net margin 2.4% 2.9% 13.9%
Price-to-earnings multiple 13.3 26.3 47.6%
Diluted share count 150 million 106 million (-29.3%) 24.3%

Then: sales and net margin for the twelve months to Aug 31, 2021, the diluted share count for the quarter ended that day, and the multiple at the close of Aug 31, 2021. Now: the twelve months and the quarter to Aug 31, 2026, and the multiple at the close of Nov 4, 2026. The four shares add up to 100% before rounding. A negative share means that source pulled the price down. Split-adjusted share price, dividends excluded.

The largest contributor was the price-to-earnings multiple, or what investors pay for each dollar of profit. Investors paid 26.3 times Jabil’s profit at the latest close, up from 13.3 five years earlier, and nearly half of the stock’s gain came from that expansion.

Jabil also continued repurchasing its own stock. Its diluted share count fell 29.3%, and about a quarter of the gain came from that reduction. A wider net margin, representing the share of sales Jabil keeps as profit, added about as much as sales did. Both represent real achievements, but neither is the same as selling more.

Can Margins And Multiples Keep Rising?

Sales can grow for as long as Jabil keeps winning more work, but a margin and a multiple have limits. Jabil posted a 2.9% margin over the latest twelve months, coming in below its ten-year high of 4.8% in the twelve months to August 2024. Even a climb back to that peak would act as a one-time step, not a lift that repeats every five years.

Measured at the end of September 2026, when the share price was higher than at the latest close, the multiple stood at 28.9. Over the past ten years, it ranged from 7.9 to 124.8. That peak occurred in fiscal Q3 2020, the same quarter Jabil’s margin hit its ten-year low. In the twelve months to that quarter, Jabil kept just 0.146% of its sales as profit, and the multiple shoots up when profit is that thin. A margin cannot widen forever, and investors cannot endlessly pay more for each dollar of profit, so neither lift repeats the way sales growth can.

What Jabil Would Need To Repeat Its Rise

If the margin, the multiple, and the share count stayed where they are, Jabil’s sales would need to grow 31.9% a year for the stock to rise as much again over a similar stretch of just over five years. That assumes no more buybacks, though Jabil had about $1.4 billion left for them at its fiscal year-end. Over the past five years, Jabil grew its sales 4.2% a year.

Sales are currently growing faster. In fiscal Q4 2026, Jabil’s sales rose 28.6% from a year earlier. Sales in its Intelligent Infrastructure segment rose 45.1% over fiscal 2026. Discussing that segment on its September 30, 2026 call, management said demand for AI infrastructure remains strong and continues to accelerate.

Jabil is expected to report again in December 2026, and its sales growth is the figure to watch.
