Why Is Eaton Priced Above Peers That Earn More Per Sale?
Eaton (ETN) grew revenue 15.5% over the past twelve months, faster than any of the five industrial peers it is measured against. It trades at 41.5 times earnings, against roughly 32 times for the next two names in the group. At $409.15 a share as of September 10, 2026, what that premium buys is an operating margin that ranks fourth of six.

How Can Eaton Grow Fastest And Still Earn Less Per Sale?
Parker Hannifin (PH) is the sharpest comparison here. It earns a 21.6% operating margin on the same trailing-twelve-month basis, returned 24.7% over the past twelve months against Eaton’s 18.8%, and trades at 32.3 times earnings. Eaton’s operating margin is 17.7%.

Honeywell (HON) reflects an anomalous 7.8 times on trailing earnings distorted by one-time items, making it an unrepresentative multiple. Leave it aside: the market pays more for a dollar of Eaton’s earnings than for any other comparable name here, while three of its five peers turn more of each sale into operating profit.
What Is Eaton Building While That Margin Lags?
Capacity, and companies. Eaton is putting more than $1 billion into expansion and bringing two dozen projects online across Electrical Americas, where organic sales rose 18% in the second quarter of 2026 on data centers up about 65%. Margins there reached 27.5%, 190 basis points better than the first quarter of 2026, and management tied most of the year-over-year margin decline to a temporary gap between price and cost.
Buying companies costs reported profit, too. Boyd, bought for the cold plates and liquid cooling units that complete the grid-to-chip line, adds a guided $1.5 billion of revenue in 2026 against $30.03 billion of trailing revenue. Second-quarter earnings were $2.11 a share reported, and $3.15 adjusted after excluding $0.49 of charges tied to acquisitions and divestitures, $0.50 of intangible amortization and $0.05 of restructuring. Growth bought this way lands in revenue at once and in reported profit later.
Can Eaton’s New Plants Earn That Premium?
Management affirmed the full-year segment margin guide at a 24.3% midpoint and set the third quarter of 2026 at 24.8%. Those are segment margins, a higher and different measure than the 17.7% trailing company-wide figure. Clearing that third-quarter figure is the key operational milestone to show that recent capacity additions are generating their projected return.
The risk is in how that margin step gets built. Of the 450 to 500 basis points of margin improvement guided in Electrical Americas from the first half of 2026 to the second, 300 come from price and cost and 150 to 200 from output and productivity. While management noted that its pricing actions were fully implemented by early August to offset cost pressures, that cushion leaves little margin for error if mix weakens or project deliveries slip.
Even so, the group’s fastest growth and its richest multiple bought less than a point of outperformance against the S&P 500’s 17.9% over the past twelve months. A Winning Peer Comparison Doesn’t Eliminate Concentration Risk
Ranking a company against its peers sharpens the picture, and whichever name wins is still a single stock. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision.
