How Much Did Dominion Stock Really Pay Its Holders?

Dominion Energy (D) sells electricity in Virginia and South Carolina and pays its holders a dividend, which came to a yield of 3.9% at the November 2, 2026 close. Over the past five years, however, the share price has fallen well behind the S&P 500. For anyone holding Dominion for income, what matters is how much ground those dividends won back. So once every dividend is counted, what do you think a five-year holder ended up with next to the market?

How Far Has Dominion Stock Trailed The Market?
Measuring price alone, Dominion stock fell 11.5% over the five years to November 2, 2026, compared to a 65.1% rise for the S&P 500. That performance left Dominion 76.6 percentage points behind the market. Anyone evaluating the stock solely by its share price would mark those five years as a loss during a stretch when the broader market posted large gains.
How Much Did Dominion’s Dividends Add?
With dividends reinvested, Dominion stock returned 10.8% over the same five years. The dividends added 22.3 percentage points to that return, accounting for all of a five-year holder’s gain and covering the fall in the share price.
Did The Dividends Close The Gap For Dominion Holders?
The S&P 500 pays dividends too, so a fair comparison counts them on both sides.
| Return from Oct 25, 2021 to Nov 2, 2026 | On price alone | With dividends reinvested |
|---|---|---|
| The stock | -11.5% | +10.8% |
| S&P 500 | +65.1% | +76.1% |
Before taxes and costs. The S&P 500 is measured through the SPDR S&P 500 ETF.
Including dividends, the S&P 500 returned 76.1%, leaving Dominion 65.2 percentage points behind. Dominion’s dividends closed only a small part of its shortfall against the market, mostly because the price gap was far wider than what they added.
What This Means If You Own Dominion For Income
Dominion does pay more in dividends than the market. Over the past year, its dividends added 4.9 percentage points to its return, compared to 0.9 for the S&P 500. Across five years, however, that extra cash still left Dominion holders well behind a market that paid dividends of its own.
Dominion earns most of its revenue selling electricity through Dominion Energy Virginia, which brought in 71.7% of company revenue in fiscal 2025. On its October 30, 2026 call, management pointed to strong demand from data center customers in Virginia and reaffirmed its dividend guidance. Income holders should also know that NextEra Energy agreed in May 2026 to buy Dominion in an all-stock deal, paying 0.8138 NextEra shares for each Dominion share. Management still expects the deal to close in the second half of 2027, so a holder’s future dividends and returns will depend on NextEra.
