What Is The Biggest Threat To Archer Aviation Stock?

Archer Aviation (ACHR) stock trades at 443 times its sales over the last twelve months, compared with 3.2 times for the S&P 500. At that price, buyers appear to be paying for an air taxi business that has barely started selling, and the biggest risk to that bet is timing. Management raised this risk on its earnings call on August 10, 2026. So what did management warn about?

Management Cannot Say When Archer’s Air Taxis Will Scale
Management said on the fiscal Q2 2026 call that the market for civil passenger aircraft is very large, but that predicting exactly when and how fast it will scale remains difficult. Archer is navigating a certification process that management called very rigorous. Management also said the company’s Midnight aircraft has reached the fourth and final phase of the FAA’s type certification process, yet that progress came with no date for scale.
Timing matters because the stock appears to be priced on what air taxis could become, not on what Archer sells now. Every quarter the market takes to arrive is another quarter of losses, and how Archer will contain its cash burn came up on the same call. Management answered that Insitu, a drone maker Archer is buying from Boeing, would provide a platform to generate cash flow, and that its goal is to keep the cost structure similar to where it stood then.
Archer Aviation Sells Little And Spends Heavily
Archer’s sales are growing from almost nothing. Revenue climbed from $0.3 million in fiscal Q4 2025 to $1.6 million in fiscal Q1 2026. It reached $5.0 million in fiscal Q2 2026, which management credited to growth in operations at the Hawthorne Airport in L.A.
Cash outflows are far larger. Archer’s free cash outflow reached $681 million over the twelve months to June 30, 2026, up from $477 million a year earlier. The company held $1,561 million in cash and short-term investments at June 30, enough to cover about 2.3 years of that outflow.
The shares have already fallen a long way. Archer stock returned -64.0% in the year to October 23, 2026, while the S&P 500 returned 15.1%. Its latest close stood 65.5% below its highest close of the past year, which was $11.34 on October 27, 2025. Even after that fall, the price appears to assume the air taxi business will grow many times over.
How Worried Should Archer Aviation Holders Be?
Holders face a real but slow-moving risk: the timing of air taxis will not be settled in one quarter, and Archer is buying businesses that would make it rely less on them. Archer agreed to acquire Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid from Boeing in exchange for Boeing taking a strategic equity stake. Management described Insitu as profitable, with more than $200 million of revenue a year.
On September 24, 2026, the company said the antitrust waiting period for the deal had expired. Management targets closing by the end of the year and, on the August call, said it aims to keep cash burn relatively flat from that level after the close.
Holders also own a stock that has fallen hard when markets turned. Archer stock fell 38% in the 2025 US tariff shock, compared with 19% for the S&P 500. Archer’s quarterly revenue is the measure to watch when the company next reports, expected in November 2026.
How To Act On ACHR?
Not necessarily on Archer Aviation alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. In Archer Aviation’s own industry, ATI stock rose 882% and FTAI Aviation stock rose 704% over the five years to October 2026, while Archer Aviation stock fell 42%.
Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
