Investors are paying a premium for eBay (EBAY). The stock currently trades at 4.3 times its sales over the past twelve months, compared to 3.1 for the S&P 500. Justifying that valuation requires tracking a recent shift in corporate messaging. Back in April 2025, during the fiscal Q1 2025 call, management emphasized the uncertainty that tariffs and trade policy changes created for eBay’s sellers and buyers. That rhetoric has faded. So what has management been talking up instead?

eBay Now Talks Up eBay Live And Depop

During the fiscal Q2 2026 call on August 5, 2026, management talked up eBay Live, which posted another record quarter. Gross merchandise volume on eBay Live, the value of goods sold through it, grew roughly eightfold, management said. Furthermore, management believes the platform is gaining share across all 7 markets where it operates.

Management also said eBay had completed its acquisition of Depop the week before. This deal broadens eBay’s fashion portfolio and expands its reach, management noted. On the same call, management talked up using AI to change how people buy and sell on eBay.

Management no longer emphasizing trade policy marks a recent departure. As late as the fiscal Q1 2026 call on April 29, 2026, management described shipping as a major focus for the year amid an increasingly complex trade policy landscape.

eBay’s Sales Have Sped Up Over The Past Year

Financial performance has accelerated over the past year. eBay’s revenue grew 14.8% in the April to June 2026 quarter, up from 6.1% in the same quarter a year earlier. The operating margin rose to 21.6% in that quarter, compared to 17.5% a year earlier, so operating profit grew faster than revenue.

Certain segments within the marketplace expanded faster than the broader business. Gross merchandise volume across eBay grew 14% from a year earlier in fiscal Q2 2026, excluding currency moves, management said. Meanwhile, consumer-to-consumer trade, recommerce (the resale of used goods), and the categories eBay has chosen to focus on each grew more than 20%.

Should eBay Holders Worry Less About Tariffs Now?

For a holder, the quieter tone is a modest positive. Management did not raise trade policy on the latest call, though it called the trade landscape increasingly complex as recently as April. Beyond the rhetoric, eBay’s sales growth and operating margin were both higher in the latest quarter than a year earlier. Shareholders have benefited over the past year as well. The stock returned 32.5%, compared to 17.3% for the S&P 500.

Yet the pace of growth has not accelerated in every quarter. Revenue growth peaked at 19.5% in the January to March 2026 quarter and then slowed in the quarter that followed.

eBay is expected to report its July to September 2026 results on or around October 27, 2026. Investors should monitor two key details. First, watch whether management brings up trade policy again. Second, track revenue growth against the 14.8% posted in the April to June quarter.
