The stock has trailed the market over the past year, yet its margins sit at multi-year highs, and it is the margin that has room to fall.

Amazon.com (AMZN) trades at $256.26, about 90% of its 52-week high and above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, the shape of an uptrend. Over the past twelve months, though, the stock returned 12% against 20.5% for the S&P 500. What is genuinely stretched here is not the earnings multiple but the margin.

The Peak Leans On AWS, And The Quarter Carried Two One-Off Items

On headline trailing numbers the stock appears modest at 20.4 times earnings, but that multiple is artificially depressed: trailing net income includes roughly $41 billion in non-operating, below-the-line gains that distort historical comparisons. The extreme is in profitability. Net margin on $775.7 billion of trailing-twelve-month revenue is 17.4%, the highest in at least five years and nearly double its 9.4% three-year average, and it runs above the 12.1% operating margin, so part of the earnings behind that multiple is earned below the operating line.

The operating lift is concentrated—AWS produced $16.6 billion of the $27.5 billion of operating income reported for Q2 2026—but the broader margin surge is even more skewed: a non-operating valuation gain on Anthropic added over $53 billion below the operating line, dwarfing the core business gains.

That gain and about $600 million of tariff refunds both reduced Q2 2026 expenses, and management says those refunds are the significant majority of what it expects to receive. Meanwhile, by the company’s own account the fulfillment network is absorbing fuel inflation and higher line-haul rates, partly offset by an FBA fuel and logistics surcharge implemented in April, though the CFO added that excluding those cost increases, shipping costs grew more slowly than worldwide unit growth.

The Planned Capital Bill Behind That Margin Is Still Rising

A peak margin can mean-revert on its own; this one also arrives with an invoice. Amazon has already raised planned 2026 cash capital expenditure to approximately $220 billion from about $200 billion, and by the CEO’s account the higher cost of memory pushed it up. Management is direct that free cash flow faces headwinds until the data centers now being built come online. Operating cash flow covered about 119% of net income over the last twelve months, down from about 172% a year earlier. Owning a build-out of that size is a different proposition from the Trefis High Quality Portfolio, which does not depend on the handful of largest technology names to produce its returns.

What The Options Market Is Not Braced For

Implied volatility of 29% sits in the 21st percentile of its trailing one-year range, pointing to a market priced for calm relative to how the stock has traded over the past twelve months; the size of the move options are pricing is the live gauge of that gap. None of this is a case for selling. Revenue growth appeared to accelerate in the most recent quarter, but both that lift and the softer Q3 2026 revenue guide are tied to the same calendar quirk: Prime Day shifted into Q2 this year after landing in Q3 in 2025. Operating income for Q3 2026 is guided to between $22.5 billion and $26.5 billion, and the figure to watch is whether it lands inside that range without another one-off item doing the work.
