Why Is IonQ Stock Sinking?

Rigetti fell nearly as far over the same stretch while IBM and Honeywell held up far better, a split narrow enough to locate the move in how the quantum story is priced, not in anything IonQ reported.

IonQ (IONQ) shares fell 42.9% between late May and late August, from $70.14 to $40.03. The S&P 500 gained 1.5% over the same stretch. The natural assumption is that the company’s immediate operational performance deteriorated. Yet IonQ’s reported quarterly results showed continued commercial execution. Inside that same window the company posted the strongest quarter in its history, raised its full-year revenue guidance and closed a $1.8 billion acquisition.

Record Revenue Came From Machines Leaving The Building

Second-quarter revenue was $80.1 million, up 287% from a year earlier and up 132% on an organic basis, and management raised full-year guidance for IonQ alone to $280 million to $290 million. The largest piece of that upside was physical: the rollout of fifth-generation quantum computing systems, with subsystems shipped to KISTI in South Korea and a machine in final assembly at QuantumBasel, next to the fourth-generation machine that a customer bought earlier. A repeat buyer taking the next generation of machine is not the behavior of a market losing interest.

Rigetti Fell Almost As Far, IBM And Honeywell Did Not

Over the identical window Rigetti Computing fell 41.0%, within two points of IonQ, while IBM fell 12.4% and Honeywell International fell 5.9%. A decline that catches IonQ and Rigetti together is no verdict on one company’s execution, and against a rising S&P 500 it is not a market-wide move either.

Concentrated heavily in pure-play names while diversified giants like IBM and Honeywell held up far better, the decline points at a repricing aimed at pure-play quantum valuations rather than broader tech. Returns that arrive and leave with a single thematic story are a different proposition from the Trefis High Quality Portfolio, which does not depend on the handful of largest technology names to produce its returns.

Owning The Foundry Did Not Come With Combined Numbers

One thing did deteriorate over those three months, and it came from the deal meant to reduce risk. IonQ closed its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater days before reporting, putting a semiconductor foundry under its own roof to fabricate the ion trap chips built for the electronic qubit control technology of Oxford Ionics, acquired in September 2025. The first fully featured, fully integrated chips from that foundry are under test at IonQ’s College Park facility, with 256-qubit systems planned to begin commissioning in 2027. That pace is expensive well before it produces revenue. Adjusted EBITDA for the June quarter was negative $120.3 million, about $20 million of that additional SkyWater spending and roughly $10 million more in pre-integration costs. After less than a week as a combined company, and with roughly $120 million of IonQ’s fiscal 2026 spending with SkyWater converting into SkyWater’s own revenue, some of it still to be eliminated on consolidation, management has not yet guided the combined company at all.

The Repricing Is About 2027, Not About June

So the fall carries real information, just not about the quarter inside the window. IonQ commands a market value of about $14.7 billion on $250 million of IonQ-only revenue over the past twelve months, which means the price rests on machines not yet commissioned rather than on what ships today. That is the part shipping more fifth-generation systems cannot defend. For anyone weighing whether a fall this steep is an entry or a warning, the dip buyer’s playbook is the place to test it: the live question is whether the 2027 commissioning date holds.

This Is What Concentration Risk Looks Like In Real Time

A drop like this is noise on a small position and real damage on a large one. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision.
