Nike Is Shipping Less On Purpose, And That Is The Case For Nike Stock
The sales guide came down, and the margin guide came forward in the same update; the open question is how much of that second half is already in the share price.
Nike (NKE) trades at $39.48 after falling about 48% over the past twelve months while the S&P 500 gained about 20%. The market is pricing a sales problem, and it is real. The number worth arguing over is not revenue but a 6.7% net margin near the low end of Nike’s peer group, which the company is now giving up sales to lift.

Half Of Nike’s Revenue Is Still Going Backwards
Nike sportswear and Jordan streetwear together account for roughly half of revenue; sell-through in both remains challenged, and management expects them to stay negative across fiscal 2027, with improvement only in the back half. The fiscal Q1 2027 revenue guide has already been cut to a decline of low to mid single digits, and the company describes its consumer as under pressure worldwide.

Why 6.7% Is Headroom Rather Than A Verdict
Nike earns that 6.7% on $46.4 billion of revenue over the trailing twelve months; a one-time $986 million tariff recovery adds roughly 1.7 points to that figure, so the underlying margin is closer to 5.0%, still below peers reaching as high as 19.1%. Each point of net margin on a base that size is worth roughly $460 million, which is why the profit case runs through margin, not sales. Closing that gap starts with choices Nike has already made: over fiscal 2026 Nike pulled more than $2 billion of classic footwear franchises out of the market, discounted less on Nike Digital, and cut its EMEA off-price business by more than half in the fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, producing a 15% improvement in full-price realization there.
Nike’s Response To A Weaker Consumer Trades Sales For Margin
Nike has met that consumer pressure by selling less and holding prices. The same guidance update that took the revenue outlook down also pulled gross margin expansion forward into the first quarter of fiscal 2027, because tightening buys and selling less into the channel moderates revenue and lifts margin together. Behind those moves sits a cost program already paid for: nearly $400 million of severance charges hit fiscal 2026 as Nike moved to reposition the business, and management expects the supply-chain actions, rightsizing its distribution network to deliver positive operating leverage and gross margin in fiscal 2027. Net debt of about 0.4 times EBITDA means the balance sheet can carry the reset without outside financing. Balance-sheet strength of that kind is one of the properties the Trefis High Quality Portfolio favors in its holdings.
The Case Rests On Gross Margin, Not On Sportswear
None of this turns sportswear around; the net margin has not turned yet: on a like-for-like basis, excluding the tariff recovery, net margin fell to about 5.0% from 7.0% over the trailing twelve months. And management’s guide is for flattish earnings through fiscal Q2 2027, excluding the tariff benefit.
The stabilization is in gross margin: strip the one-time $986 million tariff recovery out of the fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, and the underlying line was down just 10 basis points from a year earlier, better than management had guided. The test is whether gross margin actually expands when fiscal Q1 2027 is reported. Until then, the question is whether a price barely above its 52-week low of $39.09 already pays for the wait, which is what a screen of stocks the market has already marked down is built to sort.
