Alphabet Stock Surged When Its AI Spending Found Customers

Its largest peers all trailed the market over the same year, so the re-rating was about what Alphabet’s own spending started to earn rather than about artificial intelligence in general.

Alphabet (GOOGL) stock returned 69.6% over the past year, against 20.3% for the S&P 500. The easy reading is that investors bid up anything attached to artificial intelligence. Alphabet’s largest peers did not keep up. What re-rated this company was narrower: its own capital spending began arriving with customers already attached.

Alphabet Made The Run Without Its Peers

Over the same twelve months, Meta Platforms (META) fell 28.9%, Microsoft (MSFT) fell 6.1%, and Amazon.com (AMZN) returned 12.1%, all three behind the S&P 500. A whole theme being repriced does not look like that; one company being repriced does. Picking in advance which of those names turns out to be the one that runs is a different proposition from owning the Trefis High Quality Portfolio, which does not depend on the handful of largest technology names to produce its returns.

The Capital Started Arriving With Contracts

The change the market has been pricing shows up in Google Cloud, where revenue grew 82% to $24.8 billion in Q2 2026, and its operating margin went from 20.7% a year earlier to 35.6%. Scaling and widening margin at once is what separates a business absorbing demand from one paying to chase it, and management attributes much of this momentum to the rapid enterprise adoption of Gemini, its platform for deploying corporate AI agents. The segment carries a backlog of $514 billion, just over half of which management expects to convert into revenue within 24 months. And in Q2 2026, the company booked its first TPU system sales, delivered into customer data centers.

The Bill Keeps Growing, And The Margin Faces A Test

Management raised the full-year 2026 capital budget to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion, against revenue of nearly $446 billion over the trailing twelve months. Free cash flow was negative $5.9 billion in Q2 2026, against $53.3 billion for the trailing twelve months, and management expects free cash flow to stay under pressure. The company also says that leaning on third-party capacity in Q3 2026, while internal capacity is built, will put some pressure on cloud operating margins. So cloud margin is the number now under test. The stock has already given back part of the run, sitting roughly 14% below its high over the trailing 52 weeks. A move like this is even better to own than to watch, and it is also how one holding grows into an outsized share of a portfolio. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
