Intel’s free cash flow has turned positive for the first time in four years, and its own capital plans decide whether it stays there.

Intel (INTC) trades at $100.95 after returning 362.9% over the last twelve months, and it sits 28.4% below its 52-week high. It trades at 9.1 times sales, well above the sector average of 3.6x. Holders sitting on that gain are asking one plain question: add more here, take some off the table, or leave it where it is. The answer turns on cash. Intel is generating it again, and it has just raised what it plans to spend building capacity.

Intel Is Paying For Itself Again, Barely

Free cash flow over the last twelve months is $2.8 billion, positive for the first time in four years. On $57 billion of revenue that is under five cents of every sales dollar, so this is not a company awash in cash; it is one that has stopped draining it. Cash generation of that kind, held year after year, is one of the things the Trefis High Quality Portfolio insists on in its holdings, and Intel has only just started producing it.

For a holder that is the whole value of the crossing: a business funding its own build-out does not have to go looking for the money. Even so, management has said that with $40 billion of liquidity behind it, it may yet tap the capital markets if the ramp goes as well as it hopes.

The Tooling Bill Lands Before Any Payback

The turn arrives in the middle of a supply-constrained up-cycle. Data center revenue rose 59% year over year in the June quarter, and Intel Foundry is ramping 18A, where the cost of the lead Panther Lake processor is down by roughly half, year to date. Serving that demand costs money. Management has raised 2026 capital spending to more than $20 billion, most of it tooling, and says 2027 will run significantly higher. Fabs, by the company’s own description, are cash out before they are cash in, and its case is that they earn it back across the long life of a process node. The nearer-term account is more careful: the base business plus the investment tax credit keeps cash flow looking healthy, but the back-end investments Intel must make with third parties, including the substrates it buys in, could make a positive number harder to reach in 2027.

Direction Of Travel, Not The Crossing

Direction of travel decides this, not the crossing itself. The change is not noise: the run it just ended lasted sixteen consecutive quarters, and the sign has moved only twice in fifteen years. The gain has not been a straight line against the market either, with Intel trailing it by 21.0 percentage points over the past three months. Adding here means underwriting a second positive cash year through a capital cycle the company has already guided higher.

Trimming means selling the first self-funded stretch in four years, into server demand the company says it cannot yet supply. Holding is what the evidence supports, with one number to watch: whether free cash flow stays positive once Intel adds that back-end spending to the 2027 capital budget. Following that number is scoring the business rather than the story.

How Much Damage Could One Position Do To Your Net Worth?

Most portfolios hold a position that has quietly grown larger than anyone planned. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
