TripAdvisor has recently upgraded its flight metasearch option with the launch of a new airline review platform, an enhanced flights search service, and the beta launch of “flyscore” — a 1 to 10 rating system for every flight based on traveler reviews, to measure the quality of flight experiences, the in-flight amenities, and the duration of the travel. Similar to its hotels’ ranking and reviews, now travelers booking flights can make an informed decision based on a comparison of different options. The TripAdvisor platform currently boasts around 340 million monthly unique visitors. The visitors can add their flight experience reviews along with the hotel reviews in the TripAdvisor platform. Until now, flights could only be compared on the basis of their prices, but travelers can now compare experiences across flights before purchasing tickets.

What Does It Mean For Competition And Travelers?

The new features might provide competition to companies such as Skyscanner, Kayak, Google, and Expedia. All these companies partner with Routehappy to provide the flight review facility. However, given the fact that TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel review website, it does pose a challenge to these entities. Travelers, on the other hand, will be offered with much desired transparency while booking flights, which till now had been missing to a great extent.

What Might Be Next?

TripAdvisor has been aggressively growing its Instant Booking feature which lets users book hotels directly through the TripAdvisor platform. Though such an option is not yet available for flights, we can expect the company to expand into flight bookings in the future. With every such advancement, TripAdvisor is evolving from a metasearch engine into a direct competitor for the full-service online travel agencies such as Priceline and Expedia.
