Thomson Reuters (TRI) stock fell 9.9% on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.4%. The decline came on the day the company reported third-quarter results. At first glance, the quarter appeared solid: revenue rose 10% from a year earlier, and management said growth and margins came in ahead of its own expectations. So why did the stock fall?

Why Did Thomson Reuters Stock Fall On Third-Quarter Results?

News reports linked the fall to results that missed analysts’ estimates for both earnings and revenue. Adjusted earnings per share came to $0.81, against the $0.89 analysts expected, though management said the figure was still up 14% from a year earlier.

Management also guided to a slower fourth quarter. The company expects organic revenue growth of about 8% in the final three months of 2026, after posting 10% in the third quarter, and it sees its news business roughly flat from a year earlier. For the full year, management raised its organic growth outlook to a range of 8.5% to 9%, from about 8% before.

Looking further out, management said that, in its early thinking, it currently expects to spend part of the margin gains it would otherwise get from growth on AI investments during 2027. Management said its current investments are going into products such as Westlaw and CoCounsel.

Did Similar Stocks Fall With Thomson Reuters?

Most did, but by much less: Thomson Reuters fell largely on its own. Within its diversified support services industry group, 12 of 17 other companies worth $2 billion or more declined. Their median move was a fall of just 0.4%, and only one of them dropped 5% or more. The industrials sector fund XLI rose 0.9% the same session.

Thomson Reuters’ peers on the Trefis list fell further than its industry group, but still far less than it did. Four of the five stocks dropped, with FactSet Research Systems posting the largest decline at 3.2%. Fair Isaac was unchanged.

Where Thomson Reuters Stock Stands After The Drop

A drop of this scale is rare for the stock. Over the prior 365 days, it had fallen this much or more in just one session. It has also lost 26.1% since October 31, 2025, while the S&P 500 returned 11.9%. Both figures include dividends.

The shares closed at $110.18, well below their 52-week closing high of $158.16 on November 3, 2025. They had bottomed at $76.55 on June 22, 2026, and rallied from there. Even after this drop, the stock is up 17.1% since May 5, 2026, against 4.8% for the S&P 500.

Thomson Reuters is expected to report its fourth-quarter results in February 2027. Organic revenue growth, which management guided at about 8%, is the figure to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On TRI?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
