A quiet index hid some violent single-stock moves, raising questions about which declines were sudden and which were weeks in the making.

The S&P 500 returned -0.2% on Wednesday, a quiet finish that concealed severe moves in individual stocks. Insulet (PODD) was the weakest name in the index, returning -20.1% for the day.

This raises a critical question for any investor looking at today’s extremes: was this a sudden break in an otherwise stable stock, or the culmination of a longer decline? The lists below hold the first clues.

How can two stocks tell such different stories of decline?

Two names from the day’s losers list also appear on the one-month list: Insulet (PODD) and DaVita (DVA). For Insulet, the one-day drop of -20.1% accounts for its entire monthly decline of -17.5%.

DaVita’s one-month return of -19.5% tells a different story, as its weakness has been building for weeks. One move was a shock, the other a trend, yet both landed these companies on the same daily leaderboard.

A large price move is the start of your research, not the end.

The tables earlier in this report are a map of attention and volatility. A stock’s appearance, whether as a winner or loser, is not a signal to buy or sell. It is simply information that something has changed, drawing a crowd and repricing risk.

The disciplined response is to look past the percentage change and examine the underlying business. The day’s biggest winner, Charles River Laboratories International (CRL), saw its revenue decline 0.7% over the last twelve months. The biggest loser, Insulet (PODD), saw revenue grow 29.4% over the same period.

The next step is never to trade the list; it is to test it. Our Guidance Momentum screen shows which risers have management raising guidance behind them, and our Buy the Dip screen shows which of the fallers still generate the growth and cash that make a recovery plausible.

The Tape Rewards Attention. It Punishes Reaction

Big daily moves pull hard at both greed and fear, and acting on either, day after day, is how most portfolios end up trailing the index they were trying to beat.

The Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio is built for the opposite reflex: about 30 quality businesses screened for the fundamentals that survive volatile stretches, held with rules instead of reactions. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. Read the movers daily; trade them rarely.
