Is Semtech Stock’s Fall A Bargain Or A Warning?

Semtech (SMTC) stock closed at $125.12 on October 22, sitting 36.6% below its October 6 high. A steep 11.7% decline occurred on that final day alone. A drop that fast looks like a chance to buy at a discount, or like the start of further declines. The downward pressure persisted despite October 16 news reports indicating Semtech had raised its fiscal Q3 2027 outlook. So what has Semtech stock done after falls this steep in the past?

Has Semtech Stock Recovered From Steep Falls Before?
Mostly, yes. Semtech stock has experienced six declines of more than 40% over 30 trading days since 2010. Five of those events occurred more than a year ago, and the shares traded higher twelve months later in four of those instances. Across all five completed cycles, the median change a year later was a gain of 133%. The sixth drop took place in late July 2026 and is too recent to judge.
Collecting those gains required patience. Across those five dips, the median low point was 25.8% below the price on the day of the drop, and the median wait for the year’s highest price was 364 days, or about twelve months. The September 2022 selloff did not pay off, and the stock ended the following year 25% lower. Along the way, the shares sank as far as 46.2% below their price on the day of that specific fall.

Is Semtech’s Business Still Growing Under The Fall?
Yes. Revenue reached $342 million in fiscal Q2 2027, representing a 32.7% increase from a year earlier. Management said the result marked Semtech’s 10th consecutive quarter of net sales growth. Over the twelve months ending in July 2026, the operating margin stood at 12.0%, compared with 11.2% a year earlier, while cash from operations rose to $214 million from $135 million.
The data center business stood out. Management reported record data center revenue of $100 million in fiscal Q2 2027, up 91% from a year earlier. During the company’s August 25 call, management guided fiscal Q3 2027 net sales to $410 million, plus or minus $5 million, which lands about 20% above the second quarter. News reports on October 16 said that outlook was later raised. That guidance is a forecast, not a final result.
Supply is the complication management named on its August 25 call. Management said the capacity Semtech has secured may not be enough to support fiscal 2028, especially the second half, and the company is acquiring a fab near its current facility to add more. Semtech has also agreed to sell its cellular module business, a move management said lets the company focus on its core growth areas.
Semtech Stock Still Costs Far More Than The Market
Even after the recent decline, Semtech stock trades at 75.8 times its last twelve months of earnings, compared with 23.0 for the S&P 500. On a sales basis, the gap is just as wide at 9.9 times, against 3.1 for the index.
Semtech’s past declines mostly ended higher a year later, and its business continues to grow. Data center revenue is the figure to watch when the company is expected to report in November 2026. Can growth at Semtech keep pace with a valuation that far above the market’s?
