Pinterest Stock Needs A 310% Gain To Get Back

Pinterest stock is 75.6% below its old high. Reclaiming that price point requires a 309.7% gain. Stretching that recovery over a period of three years would demand an annual return of 60%.

Has Pinterest Stock Ever Gained 310% In Three Years?

Consider every three-year stretch of closing prices since April 2019, starting a new window on every single trading day. Throughout that history, Pinterest stock has never ended a three-year stretch 309.7% higher than it began. The underlying business could still perform well. Yet the stock will need a rare feat to reach its old high within three years.

What Has Waiting Cost Pinterest Holders?

Pinterest stock has remained below its old high for 5.7 years. During those same years, the shares fell 75.6% while the S&P 500 rose 96.3%, both before dividends. The total cost of waiting includes the direct loss on Pinterest, alongside the gain that same money would have generated in the index.

Is Pinterest The Same Business It Was Then?

Pinterest operates a larger business today than it did at its peak. The company also now generates a profit over a full year.

Pinterest At the high, February 2021 Now
Share price $89.15 $21.76
Business figures: twelve months ended December 31, 2020 June 30, 2026
Revenue, twelve months $1,693 million $4,556 million
Operating margin -8.4% 6.3%
Net income, twelve months -$128 million $249 million

Share prices are split-adjusted closes on February 16, 2021 and October 14, 2026. Business figures are as reported, for the twelve months to the last fiscal quarter ended on or before each date.

Revenue for the twelve months ending June 2026 is up 169.1% compared to 2020. The company converted an operating loss in 2020 into an operating margin of 6.3%. Pinterest also reaches a wider audience. The company said its global monthly active users rose to 640 million in the quarter ending June 2026.

The profit remains thin. Each of the last two quarters ended in an operating loss.

The business expanded as the share price declined. That dynamic indicates the price at the former peak was the anomaly. Soon after the high, at the end of March 2021, investors were paying 24.4 times sales for Pinterest stock. The central issue for shareholders is not when the stock reclaims its old high. The better question is whether today’s Pinterest justifies its current price of 2.7 times sales.

Does This Mean You Should Act On PINS?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
