Why Are Investors Paying Less For Paylocity’s Profit?
Market convention dictates that a declining valuation makes a stock cheaper. For investors evaluating Paylocity Holding Corporation (PCTY) (PCTY), a lower price-to-earnings multiple theoretically signals a bargain. In mid-2023, Paylocity traded at 73.2 times its profit over the latest twelve months. Today the multiple is 31.6. With the multiple down this far, is Paylocity stock cheaper than it was?

Paylocity Stock Fell As Its Multiple More Than Halved
Paylocity’s share price fell 13.8% from mid-2023 to today, before dividends. Over those same three years, the valuation multiple dropped to less than half its old level.
How Much Has Paylocity’s Profit Grown?
Paylocity’s profit rose from $141 million in the twelve months to June 2023 to $270 million in the twelve months to June 2026. That expansion means the company’s yearly profit grew to 1.9 times what it was over a three-year period.
| Twelve months to | Net income | Change in a year | Price-to-earnings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2021 | $70.8 million | +9.9% | 146.9 |
| Jun 2022 | $90.8 million | +28.2% | 106 |
| Jun 2023 | $141 million | +55.1% | 73.2 |
| Jun 2024 | $207 million | +46.8% | 35.8 |
| Jun 2025 | $227 million | +9.8% | 44.1 |
| Jun 2026 | $270 million | +18.8% | 20.7 |
| Jun 2026 (at the share price of Oct 14, 2026) | $270 million | +18.8% | 31.6 |
Net income is the reported total for the twelve months ending in the month shown. Change in a year is that net income against the twelve months before. Each price-to-earnings multiple is the market value at the calendar quarter end paired with those twelve months, over that net income; the last row uses the share price of Oct 14, 2026.
Paylocity describes itself as a cloud-based provider of HCM, finance and IT software solutions. The company kept more of each dollar of sales as profit as those sales grew: its net margin rose from 12.0% to 15.2% over those three years.
Does A Lower Multiple Make Paylocity Cheaper?
A mechanical reading of the multiple is misleading here. Paylocity reached its highest multiple of the past five years when the company earned far less than it does now. In September 2021, investors paid 172.1 times the company’s profit, whereas profit today is about three times what it was then. Investors paid that much because they expected profit to grow, and it did.
A buyer today certainly pays less for each dollar of profit than a buyer in mid-2023 did. Yet that earlier buyer was paying in advance for growth that has since arrived. Growing companies can follow this exact curve: the multiple peaks while profit is small and expected to grow, then contracts as the actual profit comes in. Paylocity’s lower multiple is what the stock looks like once much of that growth has arrived, not a discount.
Where Is Paylocity On That Curve Now?
Paylocity expanded its profit faster in the latest year, growing by 18.8% against 9.8% the year before. This profit growth also outpaced sales, which rose 11.0%. Still, investors pay more for each dollar of Paylocity’s profit than for the S&P 500’s, whose multiple is 22.7.
At its next report, Paylocity’s profit growth from here, set against the latest year’s pace, will be the central metric to watch.
