Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) announced its Exalytics In-Memory machine in 2011 at its OpenWorld conference, and the product is finally available now for purchase. With Exalytics, Oracle is gunning directly for SAP’s HANA in-memory appliance and aims to capture a significant share in the business intelligence or big data analytics appliance market. With the new Exalytics In-Memory appliance, Oracle will compete directly with SAP’s HANA, which has been gaining a lot of traction in the rapidly expanding big data market. It will be powered by Oracle’s BI Foundation Suite and the TimesTen in-memory database. The software will be complemented by Oracle’s Sun Fire Server which comes with 1 TB of RAM and Intel’s Xeon servers. It will run most Oracle offerings and will also support third-party enterprise data sources like IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, SAP BI Warehouse, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise and Teradata. The new Exalytics appliance also supports higher performance, better scalability and additional concurrent usage of the appliance.

Application software accounts for nearly 24% of Oracle’s Trefis price estimate, while enterprise servers account for another 9%. Our $38 Trefis price estimate for Oracle stands nearly 25% above the current market price.
