Shares of Moderna (MRNA) rose 13.1% on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 1.6%. The company released no announcements, earnings reports or filings around the move, which occurred on a day of broader gains for health care stocks. So what moved health care stocks, Moderna’s own sector, after the US midterm elections?

Health Care Stocks Rose On The Midterm Results

Health care stocks gained on November 4 on the midterm results, and shares of large operators in state Medicaid programs, Affordable Care Act markets and hospital groups all jumped. The Democrats’ big wins in those elections lifted the broader market that same day, though they weighed on defense stocks.

Moderna is not among those operators. The company sells vaccines, including Spikevax and mNEXSPIKE for COVID. On its July 31, 2026 call, management said it expects a roughly even split between US and international revenue for 2026.

Did Moderna Rise With Its Sector Or Alone?

Moderna advanced with its sector but climbed much further. The health care sector fund XLV gained 3.1% in the session, compared with 1.6% for the S&P 500. Four of the five companies on the Trefis peer list for Moderna also rose, with Pfizer adding 2.6%, while aTyr Pharma fell 6.8%. Moderna’s gain was more than four times that of the sector fund, so most of the move was Moderna’s own.

Where Does Moderna Stock Stand After The Rise?

A rise of this size is not new for Moderna: the stock recorded six of them in the 365 days before this session. The most recent move this large in either direction was a fall, when shares dropped 17.6% on October 22, 2026.

Moderna ended the session at $258.38, marking its highest close of the past year, compared to a low close of $22.36 on November 20, 2025. From the November 3, 2025 close to the November 4, 2026 close, the stock returned 937.3%, against 13.5% for the S&P 500. The climb has been fast lately: from August 6 to November 4, 2026, the stock returned 379.7%, a stretch that included a 177% rise on August 19 alone. That jump came after Moderna and Merck said their personalized melanoma vaccine met its goal in a late-stage trial.

At the November 4 close, you were paying 46.5 times Moderna’s sales over the past twelve months, compared with 3.2 times for the S&P 500. The company ran an operating loss over the twelve months to June 2026, and in each quarter of that span.

Revenue, which management expected in July to grow by up to 10% in 2026, is the figure to watch when Moderna reports its third-quarter results, due later in November 2026. The report is scheduled for November 6, before the market opens.
