Lionsgate Studios (LION) stock returned 105.6% in the twelve months that ended October 20, 2026. That performance outpaced the 17.1% return for the S&P 500 and doubled the money of investors who held the shares through the period. Films brought in most of Lionsgate’s sales by mid-2026. During the same period, the takeover interest that had followed the studio for months turned into a reported bid. Was there anything in Lionsgate’s own reports about its films and its library before October 2025, while its shares were still falling?

Lionsgate Pointed To Its Films And Its Library Before October 2025

Yes, the company did so twice, both times in its quarterly results. Lionsgate released earnings for the quarter ended March 2025 on May 22, 2025. Lionsgate said profit in the film segment had reached its highest quarterly level in 10 years. That same report put library revenue at an all-time high of $956 million, up 8%. That figure represents twelve-month sales from films and series the company already owns. Management also stated on the earnings call that it had completed the separation of Lionsgate and Starz, meaning the company trading as LION was now the studio on its own.

The August 7, 2025 report added a second record. Library revenue climbed 12% to $989 million over twelve months. Shares fell about 27% from May 7, 2025, the day the separated studio began trading as LION, to October 17, 2025, a period that included both reports. Read honestly, only the library figure provided a steady sign. The film profit came from a single quarter, and the company as a whole reported an operating loss of $10.6 million in the quarter ended June 2025.

How Big Lionsgate’s Film Sales Had Grown By 2026

Film revenue more than doubled from a year earlier to $587 million in the quarter ended June 2026. The company as a whole reported $777 million in revenue for the period. Management said the results came mainly from the performance of “Michael,” alongside continued sales from “The Housemaid.”  Film segment profit reached $105 million, marking the highest for a first quarter in the company’s history. Lionsgate had pointed to that same measure in May 2025.

Financial results did not account for all of the year’s gain. Shares jumped 14.4% on October 20, 2026, the last day of the year measured here, on a report of a takeover bid by Legendary Entertainment. That interest was public before the year began too. Deadline reported in July 2025 that Legendary was looking to acquire the newly separated studio.

Is Lionsgate’s Library Still Growing Today?

No. Library revenue kept setting records for a few quarters after October 2025, but it has since stopped growing. It reached $1.05 billion over twelve months in the February 5, 2026 report, up 10%. Management put the figure at $987 million on the August 6, 2026 call, roughly in line with the prior year.

The film side is harder to read ahead of time. Management said on that call that Lionsgate’s earnings sometimes depend on the performance of three or four titles, meaning one strong film quarter is not yet a pattern. The library offered the one early sign that showed up every quarter. That metric has now slipped from $1.05 billion to $987 million, roughly in line with a year earlier. Library revenue is the figure to watch when Lionsgate next reports, expected on or around November 5, 2026.

Does This Mean You Should Act On LION?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
