Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) stock trades at 29.1 times its earnings over the past twelve months, compared with 22.7 for the S&P 500. Investors paying that premium appear to be counting on more growth. The company raised its 2026 guidance on October 13, and Chief Executive Joaquin Duato pointed to one new product as one of its most transformative MedTech innovations. So which product is it?

The Product Is OTTAVA, A MedTech Innovation

In its October 13 results, Johnson & Johnson announced that it delivered OTTAVA during fiscal Q3 2026. Executives listed the product among the breakthroughs they said will redefine care for patients. OTTAVA is a table-integrated soft-tissue robotic surgery system.

The product falls under MedTech, which sits alongside Innovative Medicine as one of the company’s two reported segments. Because OTTAVA is so new, it remains a possibility for MedTech, not yet a proven source of sales.

How Much Of Johnson & Johnson Is MedTech?

MedTech brought in 35.9% of Johnson & Johnson’s revenue in fiscal 2025, with Innovative Medicine accounting for the rest. Any lift from OTTAVA begins in this smaller side of the business. The entire company brought in $25.3 billion in the quarter to June 2026 alone. At that scale, a single new product is usually incremental. OTTAVA would add to growth inside MedTech rather than reshape the company.

In the year to October 14, 2026, the stock pulled well ahead of the index, returning 36.0% against 17.3% for the S&P 500. The stock’s October 14 close was 8.8% below the year’s highest close, reached on September 3. At the end of the June 2026 quarter, the price-to-sales ratio sat at 6.2. That figure marked the highest multiple at any quarter-end since fiscal Q3 2016. Given that gain and those multiples, the share price appears to assume more growth, and OTTAVA is one place it could come from.

Can OTTAVA Lift MedTech’s Growth?

MedTech’s sales grew 6.1% in fiscal 2025, about the same pace as Innovative Medicine’s 6.0%, leaving neither segment far ahead of the other. For OTTAVA to matter, it would have to help lift MedTech’s pace. It is too early to tell whether it has. The system was delivered only in fiscal Q3 2026, and a single product has a large MedTech business to move.

Johnson & Johnson’s next report is expected on or around January 26, 2027. When those numbers arrive, MedTech’s sales growth is the measure to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On JNJ?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
