Did The Market Read IonQ Stock Right?
IonQ (IONQ) stock fell 19.8% in the week to October 13, 2026. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% over the same period. The company was not alone in its decline, as Rigetti Computing, a peer, lost 15.8%. Yet IonQ’s worst day of the week was a 9.1% drop on October 12, following its own corporate news. The company announced it would purchase Elisity in an all-stock deal valued at up to $1.3 billion. So how much of IonQ are its owners giving away?

How Much Of IonQ Goes To Elisity?
The Elisity transaction is valued at up to $1.3 billion. This represents about a tenth of IonQ’s $12.7 billion market value on October 13. Investors who sold may see the newly issued shares as a cost to existing owners. Rigetti’s 15.8% fall shows part of the drop was shared across the group.
The deal expands a share count that is already rising at a rapid pace. IonQ’s share count climbed 82.5% over the past three years. During the August 5, 2026 call, management noted that the company’s $1.8 billion purchase of the quantum foundry SkyWater was mostly a stock swap. Each existing IonQ share already represented a smaller slice of the company, and the Elisity agreement would shrink that slice again.
What Does IonQ Get For Those Shares?
IonQ is acquiring a security business, yet the companies did not disclose Elisity’s revenue. Owners are currently unable to determine whether Elisity will earn back the newly issued shares.
The acquisition joins Elisity’s enterprise Zero Trust technology platform with IonQ’s post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution tools. This integration aligns with statements management made on the August call, noting the company was starting to see high demand for both quantum computing and quantum security. Furthermore, not all of the purchase price is fixed. Up to $150 million of the total comes as performance-based earnouts. A portion of what IonQ pays therefore depends on how Elisity performs.
IonQ’s Own Business Has Not Changed
IonQ continues to expand rapidly, maintaining the same trajectory it held before October 12. Second-quarter revenue reached $80.1 million, while organic revenue grew 132% from a year earlier. Management subsequently raised its 2026 revenue guidance for IonQ alone, without SkyWater, to $280 million to $290 million.
Those sales are still accompanied by steep losses. Over the past twelve months, IonQ recorded an operating margin of minus 408.2%, compared to 18.5% for the S&P 500. The stock continues to trade at 51.8 times sales, far above the 3.1 times multiple for the S&P 500. This is a price that appears to assume such growth will last for years. If Elisity does not earn back the new shares, owners keep a smaller stake in a company that is still losing money.
The acquisition does not alter the work IonQ has already secured. The company ended the second quarter with $485 million of contracted revenue still to deliver, an increase from $122 million a year earlier. That contracted revenue and any revenue figure IonQ eventually provides for Elisity are the key numbers.
