Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) stock rose 120.6% in the twelve months to November 3, 2026, while the S&P 500 returned 11.8%. In a September 2, 2026 report during that period, management raised its outlook for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 after record orders. How much of that rise came from a bigger business, and how much from a higher price for each dollar of sales? The short answer is mostly the price, while HPE’s twelve-month margin is back at its 2024 level.

How Much Of HPE’s Rise Came From Its Sales?
HPE’s revenue grew 26.6% over the twelve months to July 31, 2026, reaching $41.9 billion. That growth was far less than the advance in its stock. Most of the rise came from buyers paying more for each dollar of sales.
That price is the price-to-sales ratio, which measures what buyers pay for the entire company against what it sells in a year. A company whose sales stay flat, for example, doubles in value if its ratio goes from one to two.
HPE’s ratio climbed from 0.8 at the end of June 2025 to 1.4 at the end of June 2026. That marked its highest reading in quarterly data going back to fiscal 2016.
How Did HPE’s Business Change In A Year?
HPE’s operating margin rose in each of the three quarters following fiscal Q4 2025, when it stood at 4.2%. It reached 6.3% in fiscal Q1 2026 and 7.7% in fiscal Q2 2026.
In fiscal Q3 2026, the operating margin reached 12.0%, compared with 4.7% in fiscal Q3 2025. Revenue for that quarter was $12.2 billion, up 33.7% from a year earlier. Management said some of its figures are normalized to include Juniper Networks results from the start of fiscal 2025. The figures in this article are as reported in company filings, not management’s adjusted figures.
Management reported that quarter on September 2, 2026. It said the company booked more orders than in any prior quarter, leaving a record backlog, and that supply constraints were still holding back its ability to meet the higher demand. Management raised its outlook for both fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, and it now expects fiscal 2027 revenue to grow 13% to 17%.
HPE’s Twelve-Month Margin Is Back At Its 2024 Level
Over the twelve months to July 31, 2026, HPE’s operating margin was 7.8%, matching its level over the twelve months to July 31, 2024. Its highest twelve-month level at any quarter end since fiscal 2016 was 8.9%, recorded in fiscal Q2 2023.
So the price you pay for each dollar of HPE’s sales climbed to the top of its range, while its twelve-month margin stayed inside its own. At the November 3, 2026 close, the ratio was 1.7, exceeding its June 2026 reading. You now pay 25.4 times HPE’s earnings, compared with 22.8 for the S&P 500. The shares have already fallen 22.3% from October 5 to November 3, 2026, while the S&P 500 lost 2.6%.
Management expects HPE’s adjusted gross margin to ease toward more historical levels as AI systems grow. It also expects the adjusted operating margin to fall from fiscal Q3 to fiscal Q4 2026. HPE’s twelve-month operating margin, 7.8% today, is the number to watch when HPE reports fiscal Q4 2026, expected in November 2026.
