Who Is Paying For GRAIL’s Cash Burn?
GRAIL (GRAL) sells Galleri, a blood test meant to detect many cancers early. Running the business and paying for buildings and equipment left the company with negative cash for the quarter that ended in June 2026. GRAIL burned $80 million. It has spent more cash than it brought in during each of the last four quarters. How many quarters would you guess GRAIL’s cash covers at that pace?

How Fast Is GRAIL Burning Cash?
GRAIL burned cash equal to 182% of its sales in the June 2026 quarter. It burned the same sum of cash in the June 2025 quarter.
| Quarter ended | Sales | Cash the business brought in | Cash left after spending on buildings and equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar 2025 | $30 million | -$100 million | -$100 million |
| Jun 2025 | $40 million | -$80 million | -$80 million |
| Sep 2025 | $40 million | -$60 million | -$60 million |
| Dec 2025 | $40 million | -$60 million | -$60 million |
| Mar 2026 | $40 million | -$90 million | -$90 million |
| Jun 2026 | $40 million | -$80 million | -$80 million |
Each row is one fiscal quarter. A negative figure is cash going out. The last column is free cash flow.
The combined burn over the last four quarters was smaller than over the four quarters before them. That counts in the company’s favor. Yet the latest quarter was no better than the same quarter a year earlier. The burn was steady in the latest quarter rather than shrinking.
How Long Would GRAIL’s Cash Last?
GRAIL held $860 million in cash and short-term investments at the end of June 2026. That reserve would last about eleven quarters if the company kept burning cash at the latest quarter’s pace without raising new funds. Its debt is $90 million. This sits far below the cash it holds, meaning the cash covers more than two years rather than just a few quarters.
Who Has Paid For The Burn So Far?
Shareholders have. GRAIL’s share count rose 39% over the two years to June 2026. Selling new shares leaves each existing share with a smaller piece of the company. That is how holders paid for the burn. Lenders paid for little of it: debt went from $80 million to $90 million over those two years, though debt rose from $51 million to $91 million in the latest quarter alone.
New money also arrived in the latest quarter. GRAIL holds more cash now than the $600 million it had a year earlier, even though it burned cash in every quarter since. Most of the new money arrived in the December 2025 quarter, when about $420 million of financing came in and the share count rose 13%. Samsung added $110 million in a deal that closed in June 2026. That money already sits in the quarter-end cash balance.
What Has To Change At GRAIL
On the August 5, 2026 call, management said patients paying out of their own pocket account for about 70% of the Galleri tests sold. Many insurers and employers are waiting for FDA approval before beginning serious talks, management added. The company expected approval in the first part of 2027, though that date is a forecast. A panel advising the FDA backed Galleri’s safety on September 23, 2026. It narrowly endorsed the test’s effectiveness, though Reuters reported the panel was divided on the evidence.
Sales did grow 26% in the June 2026 quarter from a year earlier. The cash GRAIL burns each quarter remains the figure to watch in every report. That number was $80 million in the latest one.
