Alphabet (GOOGL) generates its largest single revenue stream from ads placed alongside Google search results. Users are now starting to search through AI, asking the system for answers and help with tasks. This shift could either expand the search business or erode what it earns. Alphabet has yet to show how much less an AI-answered search earns compared to an ordinary search.

AI Mode Searches Earn Alphabet Less So Far

Management has said strong growth in AI Mode queries held back Search revenue in the third quarter of 2026, because those searches brought in less advertising money. Executives cited this dynamic as one reason Search growth slowed from the second quarter, noting that currency moves were the single largest factor.

During Alphabet’s October 28 earnings call for that quarter, analysts asked about rolling out AI agents to the full user base. They questioned whether transitioning search to these agents could become a headwind.

Search Ads Bring In About Half Of Alphabet’s Revenue

Overall search volume on Google continues to rise. Management said query growth reached its highest level in five years.

Google Search and other advertising revenue rose 12% from a year earlier to $63.3 billion in the third quarter. That accounts for about 50% of Alphabet’s $127.6 billion in revenue for the quarter. Total revenue grew 25%, while Google Cloud revenue rose 103%, so the business most exposed to AI searches is growing more slowly than the company as a whole.

What Has Alphabet Said About Ads In AI Mode?

Management has said it views AI agents as clearly additive to search and as an expansion opportunity, though it noted the technology remains in its early days. The company said click-through rates within AI Mode are already similar for sponsored and organic product listings.

Alphabet is expanding AI Mode ads into international markets for the first time and adding multiturn ads in the U.S. These steps address where ads appear and how often people click them, but they do not reveal how much less an AI Mode search earns than an ordinary one. Management itself pointed to this earning gap. If that gap stays, more AI searches could mean slower growth for Alphabet’s largest revenue line.

What Alphabet Expects For Search Ads In Q4 2026

Management has said Google Services revenue growth will come under pressure in the fourth quarter of 2026, as Alphabet laps the search acceleration that began a year earlier. The company also expects a slightly larger currency headwind, which will be felt mainly in Search and YouTube ads.

For now, users are searching more on Google, even as AI Mode searches still earn less than ordinary ones by management’s own account. Growth in Google Search and other advertising revenue is the figure to watch when Alphabet reports its fourth quarter, expected in February 2027. Alphabet stock closed at $278.99 on November 2.
