Its own supply story is real, and so is the size of the swings that come with owning it.

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) stock has climbed 15.3% over the past five trading days while the S&P 500 slipped 1.4%, and a name rising while the market falls is exactly what investors chase. Five days settle nothing. The question that decides what the stock does for your money is whether that return is Freeport’s own story or the market you already own, and what owning it does to your swings.

A 0.57 Correlation, And Buyers The Index Already Owns

Over the past five years Freeport’s daily moves have carried a 0.57 correlation with the S&P 500, the middle of the zero-to-one range, where a stock takes some of the market’s direction and keeps some of its own. One place that overlap shows up is the demand side. By management’s July 2026 account, order books at Freeport’s US customers run on AI data centers and related energy infrastructure, with improved auto demand more than offsetting weakness in private construction. Those buyers are the economy an index fund already owns. Gold tracks Freeport at 0.39 over the same five years and real estate at 0.37, both further from Freeport than the index is.

Freeport Travels More Than Twice As Far In Either Direction

What correlation does not measure is size. Over those same five years Freeport returned 20.1% annualized at 45.4% volatility, against the S&P 500’s 13.0% annualized at 17.2% volatility. On daily moves over the trailing twelve months it captured about 269% of the index’s gain on up days and absorbed about 252% of its loss on down days, more than twice the market’s move in either direction. Different windows, different questions: the five-year correlation says how consistently Freeport followed the market, the one-year captures say how far it went when it did.

Grasberg’s Ramp Is The Part No Index Votes On

What is genuinely Freeport’s own is supply, and it arrives on its own schedule. Through the second quarter of 2026, production at the Grasberg Block Cave doubled from an April average of 34,000 tons per day to 69,000 in June, and mining rates at the Morenci mine ran 30% above the average of the last five years. That volume is Freeport’s own to deliver, whatever the index does. Management’s July 2026 account describes an investment-grade balance sheet with no significant debt maturities in calendar 2026 and substantial flexibility for funding the 2027 maturities, so the ramp is not running against a refinancing deadline. Balance-sheet strength of that kind is one of the qualities the Trefis High Quality Portfolio looks for in its holdings.

Own The Copper Volume, Expect The Swings

Freeport is a partial diversifier whose payoff is the return stream and whose cost is the ride. Its direction comes partly from the market a reader already owns and partly from copper out of its own mines. If a portfolio needs a cushion rather than a second engine, that is a different search, and it starts with the stocks that hold up when the index drops. The signal worth watching is Grasberg’s second-half rate against management’s guidance of 60,000 to 65,000 tons per day, below the June exit rate of 69,000.

Is Your Biggest Position Undoing Your Diversification?

Diversification is the rare free lunch in investing, and the hardest part is applying it to a position that has already grown large. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision. What your largest position would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
