Is Eaton Stock Worth More Than Its Competitors?
Investors are paying a premium for Eaton (ETN). The stock trades at 43.3 times earnings, the highest price among industrial peers including Emerson Electric and Parker Hannifin. Buyers may be paying for growth, and the company is expanding sales faster than any competitor in that group. Yet Eaton converts less of those sales into operating profit than most of its rivals. So how big is Eaton’s lead on growth, and how far behind is it on margin?

How Does Eaton Compare With Emerson Electric?
Eaton is expanding about three times as fast as Emerson, yet it operates on a thinner margin. Over the last twelve months, Eaton increased sales by 15.5%, while Emerson posted 4.8%. Emerson retained 20.7% of its sales as operating profit, compared with 17.7% for Eaton. Meanwhile, Emerson stock costs less at 35.2 times earnings.
Eaton ranks first on sales growth across the group of six, but it sits fourth on operating margin. Parker Hannifin and Hubbell also generate wider margins than Eaton while trading at lower multiples of earnings.

Where Eaton’s Lead Over Its Rivals Comes From
The company draws its initial advantage from Electrical Americas, its largest segment, which accounted for 48% of revenue in fiscal 2025. Organic sales in Electrical Americas, the growth that segment generated without acquisitions, increased 18% in the second quarter of 2026. Across all of Eaton, organic growth was 14%. During the second-quarter 2026 earnings call, management noted data centers led this expansion, with sales to those facilities up about 65%.
A growing pipeline of orders is waiting. The backlog across Eaton’s electrical businesses climbed 43% from a year earlier. Management cited adding capacity as a clear priority to convert that demand into revenue, and the company is bringing two dozen expansion projects online across Electrical Americas.
Eaton is also purchasing growth. Acquisitions accounted for 7 points of the 21% rise in total revenue during that quarter. The company agreed to acquire COL Group in late September 2026, which would add manufacturing capacity for utility and data center markets in Europe.
Has Eaton Started To Rebuild Its Margin?
Reported results do not yet show a margin recovery. Eaton recorded an operating margin of 18.8% a year ago, compared with 17.7% over the latest twelve months. Management stated during the second-quarter 2026 call that the Electrical Americas margin fell from a year earlier mostly as prices lagged costs, calling the condition temporary.
The company has raised prices since, and management noted on that call it expected prices and costs to be roughly even in the second half of 2026. Eaton posted a segment margin of 23.1% for the second quarter, beating the top end of its own guidance. This metric differs from the operating margin above. The company guided to segment margins of 24.6% to 25.0% for the third quarter of 2026. That guidance remains a forecast, not a result.
The current stock price appears to assume Eaton keeps outgrowing every rival in its group and earns a margin closer to theirs. Growth is evident in the results, and the electrical backlog is larger than a year ago. Margin recovery remains a forecast. When the company reports the third quarter of 2026, Eaton’s segment margin, compared against its own forecast, is the number to watch.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
