Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) recently posted strong fiscal third quarter results, with its net sales increasing 15% over the prior year quarter to $2.07 billion. The company attributed its strong performance to better-than-expected sales of FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1, two of its latest offerings, but refrained from declaring the exact sales figures for the two games. Unlike FIFA 16, virtually all of FIFA 17’s sales were incorporated into EA’s revenues for the third quarter since its release was only four days from the end of the second quarter.

Per Trefis estimates, FIFA contributes roughly 20% of the company’s valuation, and the franchise is one of the company’s major revenue drivers. The latest version of FIFA has added new features such as story mode and improved the graphics through the Frostbite engine. These changes have been well-received by critics as well as gamers, and have helped boost sales. Moreover, the Ultimate Team mode has helped increased gameplay hours, which bodes well for the company.

Per the data provided by VGChartz, in the first three months of the release, FIFA 17 recorded 17% more sales than FIFA 16. ((FIFA 17 Game Sales Data, VGChartz)) Unsurprisingly, the newer generation of consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) showed positive year on year growth in sales for the latest version of the game while the older generation consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) recorded a decline in sales.

Geographically, Europe is the most important region for the FIFA franchise. Almost 73% of the total sales of FIFA 17 came from Europe, which is not surprising given that the continent is home to the most popular leagues in the world and has the highest viewership. At the same time, the popularity of the sport has been steadily increasing in the U.S., as witnessed by the sales of FIFA 17, which have increased by over 30% for both newer generation consoles.
