What Was Ciena Telling You Before Its Stock Ran?
Ciena (CIEN) stock returned 101.5% from October 16, 2025 to October 19, 2026, against 17.4% for the S&P 500. The run turned out to be about cloud providers and data centers ordering more of Ciena’s optical networking gear than the company could ship. The rise began earlier, however. Shares had already risen 184% in the six months before that window opened. So what was Ciena telling investors before April 2025, when its shares still traded near $60?

What Management Said In December 2024
On its fiscal Q4 2024 call, held December 12, 2024, management said “orders in the quarter were once again above revenue.” Orders that outpace revenue move into backlog, representing sales booked but not yet shipped. By the end of that fiscal year, management placed Ciena’s backlog at $2.1 billion.
This mattered because sales were standing still. Revenue in the quarter ended November 2, 2024, was $1.12 billion, flat from a year earlier. Management also said customers were working through accumulated inventory, so a reader could see orders stacking up behind a pause in shipments.

How Ciena’s Orders Turned Into Sales In 2025
Management said on its fiscal Q1 2025 call, held March 11, 2025, that service providers had largely finished digesting that inventory. It also pointed to rapidly increasing demand for bandwidth driven by cloud connectivity. Reported sales were growing fast within two quarters. Revenue rose 23.6% from a year earlier in the quarter ended May 3, 2025. Growth reached 29.4% in the quarter ended August 2, 2025, and management said on the September 4, 2025, call that revenue came in above the top end of its guidance.
Ciena agreed on September 22, 2025, to acquire Nubis Communications, a maker of optical and electrical interconnects for AI workloads, to expand its business inside the data center. The December 2024 and March 2025 calls both took place before April 2025, while the sales gains and the Nubis deal occurred as the shares were already rising. The clearest signs were therefore public well before the measured window opened on October 16, 2025, and a reader who acted on them in early 2025 would have held the shares through both rises.
What Ciena Shareholders Are Paying For Now
Cisco Systems, Arista Networks and Broadcom all returned less than Ciena over the same window, with the best of them returning 57.0%. Ciena was also far more profitable than a year before: its operating margin was 18.1% in the quarter ended August 1, 2026, against 6.2% a year earlier. Management said direct cloud provider revenue grew over 80% in that quarter. You now pay 74.7 times Ciena’s earnings over the last twelve months, against 22.9 for the S&P 500.
The sign from December 2024 is still there. On its fiscal Q3 2026 call, held September 3, 2026, management said orders were again well ahead of sales, and Ciena ended that quarter with $8.5 billion in backlog. Management expects backlog of more than $10 billion by the end of fiscal 2026. Ciena’s backlog is the figure to watch in the fiscal fourth quarter report, expected on or around December 9, 2026.
