Box, Inc. (BOX) now keeps 9.4 cents of every dollar of sales after the costs of running its business. The company sells what it calls an intelligent content management platform to businesses, and its operating margin over the twelve months to July 2026 is the highest it has been in ten years. A record sounds impressive, but it means little until you know where Box usually sits. So what would you guess Box’s margin usually is?

How Unusual Is This For Box?
The current figure is very unusual, because Box ran at a loss for much of the past ten years. It has made an operating profit in every twelve-month period since the one to October 2022. Measured at all 40 quarter-ends over the past ten years, not just the ten shown below, its median twelve-month operating margin was a loss of 3.1%, against a profit of 9.4% now.
| Twelve months ended | Operating margin |
|---|---|
| 2017-07-31 (Q2 FY2018) | -33.8% |
| 2018-07-31 (Q2 FY2019) | -26.7% |
| 2019-07-31 (Q2 FY2020) | -20.3% |
| 2020-07-31 (Q2 FY2021) | -13.5% |
| 2021-07-31 (Q2 FY2022) | -2.7% |
| 2022-07-31 (Q2 FY2023) | -0.795% |
| 2023-07-31 (Q2 FY2024) | 5.0% |
| 2024-07-31 (Q2 FY2025) | 6.7% |
| 2025-07-31 (Q2 FY2026) | 6.1% |
| 2026-07-31 (Q2 FY2027) | 9.4% |
Twelve months in each row, ending at the same fiscal quarter end in each year, 2017-07-31 (Q2 FY2018) to 2026-07-31 (Q2 FY2027).
Box passed its previous record of 8.6%, set in the twelve months to April 2026. This marks the second quarter-end in a row at a new high.
What Is Behind Box’s Record Profit Margin?
Box has been selling more at higher prices to its existing customers, while its costs have grown more slowly than its sales. Management credited the latest quarter to rapid customer adoption of Enterprise Advanced, and named a major federal agency among the customers that upgraded to it from Enterprise Plus. Box’s net retention rate improved to 106% from 103% a year earlier, driven by both price per seat increases and seat expansion.
Suites customers now account for 69% of revenue, up from 63% a year ago, management said on the August 25, 2026 call. Sales have also grown from a year earlier in each of the last 40 quarters.
Is The Latest Quarter Still Improving?
Yes, by 1.2 percentage points. In fiscal Q2 2027, the quarter to July 2026, Box’s operating margin was 10.2%, up from 9.0% in the quarter before and 7.0% in the same quarter a year earlier.
You can ask whether that is a good margin, but the better question is which way Box is moving. A twelve-month figure moves slowly and can keep rising after the quarters inside it start to slip. Box’s latest quarter has not slipped. It beat the previous quarter and sits above the twelve-month figure, so the newest quarter is still pushing the record up.
When The Record Is Next Tested
Box is expected to report its next results in November 2026. For that quarter, fiscal Q3 2027, management forecast a GAAP operating margin of about 10.0%. The company also raised its GAAP operating margin forecast for the full fiscal year to 9.5%, from 9.0% in May. Management added that second-half expenses will be weighted towards Q4, because of BoxWorks and the extension of its Redwood City headquarters lease.
Box stock returned 26.9% over the twelve months to October 21, 2026, against 16.5% for the S&P 500. The figure to watch in the November report is Box’s operating margin for that single quarter, against the 8.3% it posted a year earlier in fiscal Q3 2026, the quarter it replaces in the twelve-month figure.
How To Act On BOX?
Not necessarily on Box alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Box is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 62%, ahead of 111 of the 125 other companies in Application Software, where the typical company fell 46%.
Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
