Shares of Broadcom (AVGO) dropped 10.4% on Thursday, November 5, 2026, while the S&P 500 lost 4.4%. The company released no announcements, earnings reports, or filings alongside the decline, but all five companies on its Trefis peer list retreated as well. If Broadcom said nothing, what hit the whole group that day?

What Hit Chip Stocks On Thursday?

Chip stocks were lower across the board on November 5, amid post-election fears of a data center slowdown. After Democrats’ midterm victory, new governors in Texas, Ohio and Georgia, all major AI data center states, were promising construction moratoriums, The Motley Fool reported. Qualcomm dropped 9.5% during the session after issuing light guidance with its results.

A look at Broadcom’s current sales mix shows why that worry matters for the company. AI semiconductor revenue accounted for 56% of the company’s total in fiscal Q3 2026, up from 49% the quarter before. These sales consist of custom accelerators and AI networking chips for a small group of customers, among them Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta. During its September 2, 2026 call, management said it based its AI outlook for fiscal 2028 on which data center sites its customers have ready.

Broadcom Fell With The Rest Of Its Peers

Broadcom’s drop landed between the extremes of its five peers, with Advanced Micro Devices posting the group’s steepest decline at 17.3% and Nvidia recording the mildest at 9.3%. The technology sector fund XLK lost 8.0% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5%. Broadcom dropped further than technology stocks as a whole, but moved in tandem with its peers.

A 5.5% Nasdaq drop in a day is rare. The 21 earlier times show the next week is a coin flip.

Where Does Broadcom Stock Stand After The Fall?

A drop of this magnitude remains rare for Broadcom: the stock had fallen this much on only two days in the prior year, most recently declining 12.6% on June 4, 2026. The stock finished November 5 at $291.53, marking its lowest close in a year, compared to its highest close of $481.57 on June 2, 2026.

The slide is recent. Broadcom stock lost 16.5% over the past twelve months while the S&P 500 returned 9.9%. Over the past three months alone, the stock fell 31.7%, compared to a 5.0% loss for the index. At the November 5 close, investors paid 15.6 times Broadcom’s sales over the past twelve months, against 3.2 times for the S&P 500.

Broadcom is expected to report its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026 in December 2026. Its AI revenue, which management guided to $21.7 billion for that quarter, is the figure to watch.

How Much Broadcom Do You Already Own?

If you own an S&P 500 or Nasdaq fund, you already own Broadcom, alongside the same few giants that lead those funds. The Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio takes a different route: 30 quality companies in equal weight, so no single stock dominates. Since its inception in September 2020 it has returned 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
