Estee Lauder Companies (EL) stock closed at its previous peak in January 2022, and the shares trade today at less than a third of that price. Many investors continue to evaluate their positions against that close, treating it as the natural baseline where the stock belongs and will eventually return. So what would getting back to the old high take?

Estee Lauder Stock Needs 247% To Get Back

Estee Lauder stock closed 71.2% below its former peak on October 15, 2026. The price would need to rise 246.9% to erase that decline. Reaching that level over three years would demand an annual return of 51.4%.

Has Estee Lauder Stock Gained 247% In Three Years?

No. The stock has not recorded a 247% gain across any three-year window, measured as 756 trading sessions starting on each market day, over the last ten years. Estee Lauder may still do well as a business. Yet returning to its prior high within three years requires a rally the shares have not delivered in ten years.

What Has Waiting Cost Estee Lauder Holders?

Investors who bought Estee Lauder at its January 2022 high have now held those shares for nearly five years. The stock is down 71.2% before dividends over that period. The S&P 500 is up 61.6%, also before dividends, during the exact same timeframe. The true cost of waiting is the loss on the stock combined with the missed returns that capital would have produced in the broader index.

Is Estee Lauder The Same Business It Was Then?

No: the company generates less revenue and earns substantially less today than it did at its previous high.

Estee Lauder Companies At the high, January 2022 Now
Share price $371.86 $107.19
Business figures: twelve months ended 2021-12-31 2026-06-30
Revenue, twelve months $17.7 billion $15.0 billion
Operating margin 19.7% 11.1%
Net income, twelve months $3.25 billion $0.182 billion

Share prices are split-adjusted closes on January 4, 2022 and October 15, 2026. Business figures are as reported, except operating margin, which excludes restructuring and other charges (non-GAAP). On a GAAP basis, operating margin was 18.1% for the twelve months ended December 2021 and 5.2% for the twelve months ended June 2026.

Estee Lauder sells Skin Care, Makeup and Fragrance products. Revenue for the twelve months ended June 2026 came in 15.1% lower than the twelve-month period ending December 2021. Excluding restructuring and other charges, the operating margin fell to 11.1% from 19.7% over those same years.

Sales did increase by 5.0% during the latest fiscal year. Even so, investors who paid the January 2022 price bought a larger, more profitable business than the one available today.

The more relevant issue for an Estee Lauder shareholder is not when the old price will return. The fundamental question is whether today’s business is worth 2.6 times its past year’s sales, which is the multiple buyers pay for it now.
