What Lumentum Stock Adds To A Portfolio Is Not Safety

This optical supplier retains behavior of its own next to the broad market, and its swings run far wider than the index’s.

Lumentum (LITE) stock is up 21% over the last five trading days, against 3.7% for the S&P 500. The pull to chase a mover like that is real, and it points to the wrong question. What decides this holding’s effect on your money is how much of its return is its own rather than the index you already own, and how wide it swings.

Five Years Of Return The Index Does Not Account For

Over the past five years, Lumentum returned 60% annualized while the S&P 500 returned 13.1%, and its correlation to the index over that window is 0.49. That is a moderate reading: the stock shares some of the market’s direction while a large part of its move is its own. An index fund already hands a reader that 13.1%; the part worth paying up for is the rest. Gold sits at a correlation of 0.08 to Lumentum over the same five years, which is what genuinely unrelated looks like.

Its Return Stream Runs On Lasers It Cannot Make Fast Enough

Lumentum makes the optical components that hyperscalers’ data centers depend on, from laser chips to cloud transceivers, and in fiscal Q3 2026 it reported record revenue of $808 million, up 90% year over year. What limits it is physical rather than commercial: management has said its supply of EML laser chips lags demand, with the imbalance greater than 30%, and adds that pump lasers and narrow linewidth lasers are more constrained still. A business whose ceiling is its own laser output runs on a clock the broad index does not set.

This Past Year It Captured Over Four Times The Market On Up Days

Behaving independently is not the same as behaving calmly. Annualized volatility over those same five years was 62%, against 17.2% for the S&P 500. The one-year capture readings make it concrete: on days the index rose, Lumentum captured about 437% of the gain, and on days the index fell, the stock absorbed about 261% of the loss. The asymmetry favors the holder, but both readings sit far above 100%, so this is an amplifier rather than a dampener. Any loss needs a larger percentage gain to undo it, and at this multiple the losses arrive bigger to start with, which is the arithmetic the Trefis High Quality Portfolio is built around.

Hold It For The Supply Squeeze, Not For Calm

Lumentum is a real partial diversifier and a high-octane one at once: it supplies a return the index does not, and widens a portfolio’s swings rather than steadying them. The signal that matters is not the next five-day move but whether supply catches up to orders. Management guided fiscal Q4 2026 revenue to a range of $960 million to $1.01 billion for a quarter that has since closed with results still to come, and said supply constraints on critical components were keeping shipments well below customer demand. For a stock that travels this far this fast, the range the options market is implying is a more useful frame than last week’s tape.

Is Your Biggest Position Undoing Your Diversification?

Diversification is the rare free lunch in investing, and the hardest part is applying it to a position that has already grown large. Strong performance is exactly how one holding quietly becomes too large a share of a portfolio. Whether that has happened in your portfolio is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team checks, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
