Salesforce.com (NASDAQ:CRM) is one of the most prominent players in cloud based, on-demand enterprise software market, which recently saw the entry of Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL), SAP (NYSE:SAP) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). Salesforce.com acquired Heroku, a cloud based Ruby application platform, almost a year ago. Heroku has now launched a new standalone cloud based SQL database service – Heroku Postgres, which runs the popular PostgreSQL database. [1] It was available earlier only to Heroku platform customers, but is now available to everyone.

Heroku and other cloud computing services like Force.com, AppExchange, Database.com account for around 35% of Salesforce.com’s $121 Trefis price estimate, which stands nearly 15% above its current market price.

Salesforce.com Continues to Launch New Cloud Computing Offerings

Heroku Postgres will offer automatic backups, 99.99% uptime and additional security features. It will be Salesforce.com’s second cloud based database offering, after Database.com, which was launched a year ago. It will be targeted at users who want a PostgreSQL database, while Database.com will cater to those enterprise customers who want to use the entire Force.com stack.

Backed by new offerings like Heroku Postgres, Data.com and Do.com, we expect Salesforce.com to steadily expand its share in the global cloud computing market, which is expected to be worth nearly $400 billion by the end of the forecast period, despite increasing competition by the likes of Oracle, SAP and Microsoft.
