Verisign Launches Domain Countdown to Drive Domain Registrations

Verisign (NASDAQ:VRSN) has launched a new service called DomainCountdown, which provides detailed information about expiring domain names. ^[1] The service currently lists more than 320,000 expired domain names that can be registered by new users. Verisign is the exclusive registrar for .com and .net domains, and competes with other domain name registry providers like NeuStar, Employ Media, and Afilias for registry rights from the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Verisign’s revenue growth is a direct function of the increase in .com and .net domain registrations and domain renewal rate which has traditionally stood at 73%-74%. With DomainCountdown, Verisign hopes to increase the number of net domain registrations by helping users discover expired domains they might be interested in registering. DomainCountdown provides detailed information about expired domains, including inbound links, domain rank, type of website, etc. While the market share of .com and .net is expected to decline, we estimate the total number of Internet domains to increase at a much faster rate, leading to a net increase in .com and .net registrations, going forward.

Verisign makes most of its revenues from .com and .net domain registration business, which accounts for nearly 90% of the $37 Trefis price estimate for VRSN stock, by our analysis. The Trefis price estimate is nearly 10% above the current market price.
