What Happened With UnitedHealth Stock This Week?
Shares of UnitedHealth Group (UNH) rose 4.5% over the two trading days through Wednesday, October 14, while the S&P 500 fell 1.1%. The company reported fiscal Q3 2026 results before the market opened on Tuesday. The stock slipped 0.2% that day before posting its gain on Wednesday. Management also raised its forecast for full-year 2026 earnings. So what did the report change for someone who owns the shares?

UnitedHealth’s Profit Beat Came On In-Line Revenue
Fiscal Q3 2026 earnings per share came in at $4.69, clearing the $4.18 analysts expected. Revenue matched estimates almost exactly at $113 billion. The surprise was in profit, not sales.
On Tuesday, the market treated the report as little news. The S&P 500 was nearly flat. UnitedHealth moved alongside CVS Health and Cigna, which also edged lower, while Elevance Health rose.
How Far Has UnitedHealth’s Profit Margin Come Back?
Through fiscal Q2 2026, UnitedHealth’s operating margin, the share of revenue left after the costs of running the business, returned above its level a year earlier. The margin was 4.6% in fiscal Q2 2025. It fell to 3.8% in fiscal Q3 2025 and 0.3% in fiscal Q4 2025. This margin decline occurred during a year of growing sales. In FY2025, UnitedHealthcare, the largest segment, grew revenue 15.7%, and Optum Rx grew 16.1%.
The margin then recovered to 8.0% in fiscal Q1 2026 and 7.1% in fiscal Q2 2026. Fiscal Q2 2026 revenue grew only 0.4%, so the extra profit came from keeping more of each dollar rather than selling more. On a twelve-month view, profit has not come back. Diluted earnings per share were $15.54 in the twelve months to June 2026, down from $23.08 a year earlier.
Management now expects more from 2026 than it did three months ago. On October 13, the company raised its full-year 2026 forecast for GAAP diluted earnings per share to at least $19.50, up from $18.70 in July. A forecast is not a result.
How Did UnitedHealth Explain Its Third-Quarter Results?
Management credited the quarter to discipline and execution across every part of the business.
The next report, covering the fourth quarter, is expected on or around January 25, 2027. Full-year 2026 diluted earnings per share, measured against management’s raised forecast of $19.50, is the number to watch in that report.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
