UBS Edges Ahead Of European Rivals To Garner Largest Equity Underwriting Market Share In Q1

The overall recovery in global equity market conditions for the first quarter of 2017 buoyed the performance of the four largest European investment banks in the industry – helping their combined market share increase from under 14% in the previous quarter to almost 16% in Q1 2017. ((Global Equity Capital Markets Q1 2017, Thomson Reuters Deals Intelligence))


Equity underwriting volumes for individual banks were taken from Thomson Reuters’ latest investment banking league tables. It should be noted that the largest equity capital market deals (IPOs and FPOs) employ more than one investment bank, so the market share figures are not exclusive.

UBS took the top spot among European investment banks this time around, as the Swiss banking giant’s involvement in large equity deals in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Asia as well as Australia more than made up for its sub-par showing in the U.S. You can see how changes in UBS’s share of the equity underwriting industry impact our price estimate for the bank’s shares by modifying the chart below.
