United Continental (NYSE:UAL) managed to start off the third quarter as expected. The airline reported increases across the board in most of its key metrics, surpassing industry averages in several areas for the month of July.

 

July recorded a welcome 3.9% growth in traffic (revenue passenger miles) y-o-y, while the consolidated capacity (available seat miles) increased at 4.6% in comparison to the same month last year. Load factor was hurt marginally and came in lower by 60 basis points at 86.9%.

Apart from this, the company managed to record its best July ever in terms of on-time departures and arrivals, as well as the fewest flight cancellations for the month among the same group of peers. This marks the fourth consecutive month of achieving this feat in the year.

Going forward, the company continues to remain confident regarding its performance. With higher capacity growth and positive PRASM expected to remain strong, United expects consolidated passenger unit revenue to be up 1% or so when compared to the third quarter of 2016.
