Travelzoo recently released a report forecasting the Eastern European region to become the most popular tourist destination in 2017. Travelzoo has forecast 2017 to be the ‘Year of Eastern Europe’ and the reasons for the rising popularity of this region are manifold:

  1. Eastern Europe is a welcome change from a lot of other popular destinations in Western Europe that have come under terror attacks.
  2. Regions like Bulgaria and Croatia are known for their scenic beauties and yet traveling to such regions cost around 30% cheaper than other beautiful and more popular regions.
  3. The Eastern European region is also a big favorite among British travelers who are concerned about the depreciation in the value of the British Pound due to Brexit. Travelzoo had earlier predicted that the tourists from the UK might need to shell out at least 10% more than their usual expenditures for their holidays in 2017.
  4. Among the destinations in Eastern Europe, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Poland are predicted to be the most popular choices.

This does look like a good opportunity for the leading online travel agencies to promote more travel services in this region. Last year, the United States was considered to be the most attractive travel destination by Travelzoo.

The following chart gives the year over year growth rate of foreign visits and overnight stays at popular European destinations for the first nine months of 2016. It shows that almost all the Eastern European destinations showed a growth in both the parameters.

We can expect a lot of travel related activities involving this region in the near future. It might not be surprising if leading OTAs partner with or acquire travel firms from these regions in the coming year.
