Toyota Motors (NYSE:TM) is planning to launch the new subcompact crossover C-HR in the U.S. auto market next spring. The vehicle was launched in Japan recently. As we wrote recently, while discussing Ford’s plans to bring the SUV EcoSport to the U.S. market, the subcompact crossover segment has been one of the fastest growing in the market this year. Sales of the top five selling models in this segment saw their units increase by 36.6% through November. Compared to the overall market, which has grown by only 0.1% this year, this segment has grown much faster.

According to the company’s management, 20% of the customers for this model are expected to be prised away from its competitors. The Japanese auto maker is targeting 170,000 units per year for the model. Around 70,000 of these units are expected to come from Japan based on the way the company is planning its production: it is planning to produce around 100,000 units at its Turkey plant and the rest in Japan. The production from Turkey’s plant is expected to be sold in the U.S. If the success of the RAV4, CR-V and Rogue is anything to go by, Toyota should expect the new model to boost its profitability in 2017.
