Toyota Motors’ (NYSE:TM) hybrid vehicle Prius has seen its sales nearly double in Japan with a new model launch so far this year. However, sales of the same model are down almost 14% in the U.S. so far this year. The contrasting fortunes of the same vehicle, extremely popular among users and well reviewed among critics, reflect the impact of lower gas prices. One of the most important components of purchasing a vehicle is considering the after purchase cost of ownership. This is comprised of registration fees, insurance fees, parking fees, maintenance expenditure and expenditure on fueling. As a result of lower gas prices, consumers in the U.S. have preferred to spend slightly more at purchase of vehicle, shifting forward the savings they would get from lower gas prices. Consequently, sales of this model have suffered.
